You're joking, however there was outrage on twitter last week when someone tweeted complaining about their awful experience with a black cab driver. Loads of people jumped on it as being racist or shouting that ethnicity was completely irrelevant in that situation. They meant a black cab

I washed the Compact cover today in Nikwax “Tech Wash” and “TX Direct”. It comes out with a slightly waxy / silicone-y feel to it. We’ll see how it works out.

Completely useless.

We had some nice dry weather last week which was a great time to air everything before putting the cover on. We've had some rain over the weekend and today, I've just been out and checked and - totally soaking. It doesn't seem to have done anything at all.

I'll give it another wash, I've still got ¾ of each bottle, so I'll give it a really strong dose. For now it's scoring 0/10.

It won't work. It's only really for regenerating technical coatings, and it's very good at that. I tried it once on an old coat that didn't have a coating and it did shit all. You'd probably have more luck smearing it in Lanolin or the like.

Now on winters. Had the new summer tyres fitted with specific instruction to swap the wheels over in the process. Get back to see him fitting the wrong wheels, turns out he'd not even looked at the worksheet. Stellar job. He looked most aggrieved when told to do it properly.

Can I paint it on while the cover is on the car ? Or will it soak through and do something weird to the paint ?

I don’t know, we paint it on our tent fabric every 2 years, properly splash it on, once it dries you can’t smell it when in the tent at all.

Ehhhh…. bugger.

Removing the driveshaft to do the reluctor rings meant waggling stuff around a bit and it’s split the brake line I’ve * never* had that happen. It’s not bent or kinked or anything , it’s just cracked.

At least the reluctor ring came off easily.

I just had the rear brake lines done on the ML as it was weeping and I wasn’t sure what hell was above the fuel tank.

It makes you wonder if it’s purely an age issue or a lack of use issue that it cracked.

I've been pondering exactly that. This car seems to have benefitted cosmetically from lack of use - lack of people getting & out, lack of stone chips, lack of parking dings, but I think being sat still for five years has also meant a lack of airflow under & around all the mechanical bits so damp has worked its way in a lot more. Stuff seems a lot more crusty than Gav's car even though this one has nearly 35k fewer miles.

Today I've managed to break my only 1/4" to 3/8" adapter and also my 3/8" ratchet trying to remove the front brake caliper

The new rear wheel bearings & reluctor rings arrived but I'm now in a quandary whether to drop the whole rear end to properly clean & repaint everything.

Trivia point - the Smart uses a De Dion tube for the rear suspension - an unusual choice in recent(ish) cars.

These are wider than standard !! I've stepped up from 145/65 to 155/60.

Allegedly these cars were deliberately under-tyred from the factory in order to get them through the moose test. I guess understeering into the moose is better than flipping the car

I bet they were nice and easy to fit. Did you even have to use a lever to get them over the rim?

Still needed a decent heave to get them on. The best thing was the wheel & tyre being so small & light to handle.

Which reminds me - I finally bought myself a centring cone for my tyre changer. It goes on the list of "stuff I should have bought sooner".

The 535d engine has proved to be TOO EXTREME for its gearbox and has gone into limp home mode and will no longer clear the error with a restart.

There's an automatic gearbox specialist a mile and a half from my house so I'll get it booked in. Looking online it seems that a service /repair will be £350 and a reconditioned box is a grand fitted.

Of course, with a freshened box, (and subject to checking the torque limits on the box) a remap might be a fun way to celebrate...

Well.... My estimate of a grand was much, much too low. a clutch has gone and it needs a rebuild. £3,090 and they can't guarantee that they'll get it done by Christmas.
