I can confirm I saw many people on the four occasions in the past few months I went there.

Apologies in advance for the daily express link. I was there in August and walked through Piccadilly gardens on my way to The Stock Exchange and stopped for lunch and had to navigate these fuckwits fighting each other.Sundayjumper wrote: Sat Nov 25, 2023 9:44 pm Everybody else's replies were totally predictablebut this is new to me:

You just took me back 35 yrs.
Often when we’d go to the video shop to rent something to watch (as a group of mates) for an evening, someone would hold up something and say “what about this? I’ve heard it’s supposed to be good”
To which he’d invariably respond “yeah, but I think all films are supposed to be good”.

Ohhhhhh, spice. I was not aware. My first thought was Mick and his ilk who like a pint and a curry and a fight*McSwede wrote: Sat Nov 25, 2023 10:08 pm Apologies in advance for the daily express link. I mean, no-one worth knowing.
I was the wrong side of the Pennines in the last week, and it was awful.

Truth be told I'm going to the Travelodge on Upper Brook Street and probably not a whole lot further. If we venture right into town then I'll do you a selfie. I've spent most of the last twenty years working with / for the MOD so I have a lot of respect for the services.dinny_g wrote: Sat Nov 25, 2023 9:53 pm Go to the Cenotaph and doff your cap to my Great Uncle - Major Henry Kelly VC, MC and Bar

I love Manchester, we had an office up there so spent a fair amount of time in the city. It's a bit like London in that you need some local knowledge to find the best places to go out, otherwise you end up in predictable large town centre places.

I went up there for work quite a few times, though not recently. Stayed generally near Oxford Road station. Always had a good time; I really like it as a city.Rich B wrote: Sat Nov 25, 2023 11:46 pm I love Manchester, we had an office up there so spent a fair amount of time in the city. One night we just went for a curry on Canal Street and the place turned out to be having a drag night. All these very dressed up chaps in makeup and heels with dowdy wives accompanying them. It was most entertaining.

All of this. My best mate lived there for more than a decade, always had a great time when I visited.Jobbo wrote: Sun Nov 26, 2023 6:35 amI went up there for work quite a few times, though not recently. I don't go in town very much at all these days, however, it's evolving at an incredible rate in the centre and if you know where you're going there's some fantastic places - as Rich says. Just avoid Piccadilly - it has always been a hub for wrong 'uns as long as I can remember, and nothing has changed really other than the substances that are abused.
Upper Brook Street is an area undergoing huge regeneration (of which we're involved in a massive scheme
), albeit a bit closer to town than where the Travelodge is. Where you're staying is pretty much on the boundary between students-ville and the new outer areas of the city centre. You'll be opposite the MRI - if you walk down Grafton Street (almost opposite) you'll find yourself on Oxford Road and all that has to offer. The Whitworth art gallery is a couple of hundred yards to the south, in Whitworth Park, or just to the north you'll find yourself right outside the University of Manchester.
If you venture into town there's a lot to be going at. I can give you more pointers on that front if you need.

The main plan is to walk down Grafton Street, turn right, go into the Academy, get drunk, then do our best to walk back to the hotelSwervin_Mervin wrote: Mon Nov 27, 2023 10:01 am ...if you walk down Grafton Street (almost opposite) you'll find yourself on Oxford Road...

Depending how I feel Saturday morning I might venture into town for a coffee before heading home but I'm not making any promises.
