The thing is, if you tell your insurance company regardless of making a claim, does it go against you in premiums....in which case you may as well make the claim and get paid anyway?

I'd text them, ask for the reg number for insurance purposes, and just casually drop in a reference to the police to make it look like they're involved. They're clearly chancers after a payout.

The incident I described above - claim against me paid out for repairs & personal injury - made no noticeable difference to my premium. I can't promise it'll be the same for everyone but that was my experience.

More weirdness from the kit car. I took it out for a little drive this afternoon, all was good, and I was revelling in the gear change being so much better since changing the engine & gearbox mounts. Which makes total sense but still, it was nice. Then the dash display lit up with "ASR" (aka traction control), and the ABS and the engine cover / gearbox system lights came on. But it was still running so 'meh', I thought, 'Italian electrics', and carried on. Then I noticed the speedo was reading zero. OK, that's a bit weird. Stopped and turned the car off while I Googled it, we have terrible signal out in the wild untamed wilderness of Berkshire so that got me nowhere unfortunately. It was a pub car park opposite a load of houses.

Restarted and it was all OK again. 'Meh', I thought, 'Italian electrics', and carried on. I stopped for petrol when I was nearly home and still no ASR warning but now a generic "check engine" warning ! Drove home, left it for a bit (I was wanting to check the oil level anyway) and still "check engine".

I'll see if I can read any codes but when I've tried before I've had no luck; the turn of the century was still a time of flux for OBD standardisation, I think I'm going to need something that reads manufacturer-specific codes.

Still seems to drive totally fine though. So the answer could well be 'meh, Italian electrics'.

And the oil level was OK. Thanks for asking.

I would suggest that if you are going to pay cash for the repair to the bmw, you insist on a body shop of your choosing and a wheel repairer of your choosing, and only hand money to those doing the work, not the owner of the car.

If you go down this route it may also put them off without threats of police or insurance too

Years back, while at work, my parked car was hit. Skip to notifying my insurance company who said "if he's not admitting it and you didn't see there's nothing we can do, but if you get anything from the cctv let us know and we'll see if we can do anything". Anyhoo, claim not made, and I couldn't renew with them because they stopped trading...forward renewal two or three years later and the usual any claims in the last five years question and I was pulled up on my "no" answer by that incident popping out of the woodwork because they'd started trading again. I don't know if the reasoning is "you're presence is partially to blame, if you weren't there he couldn't have hit you" or if it's probabilities, that your far more likely to be involved in another incident after being in one than you were to be in the first. Either way, they don't tend to avoid opportunities to bump the price up.

I ended up with an at fault claim recorded for the crash I had a few years back with a stolen car, where I 100% was not at fault. Because there was no one to claim off it went down as my fault, I got pulled when I renewed with someone else for saying I had no at fault claims

Any excuse for a pic :lol:

I now have an MOT. That's always nice.

I have a shortlist of things I want to do on the car then I think I'll punt it on next summer (including a service stamp for the book), ideally for a decent-ish price.

Then p'raps a small loan and get a fairly clean 335i to replace it. And be able to properly afford to run it, which has been an issue until last year, honestly :lol:

This is from the Financial Ombudsman

"If an accident is reported, but no claim is made

Even if you report a minor accident, the report will normally stay on your insurer’s record – for example, if you reversed into your own garage wall but decided to pay for the repairs yourself. They will also record it on the shared industry central database. But because your insurer didn’t have to pay out anything, this won’t affect your no-claims bonus.

You may have reported a car incident without making a claim, only to find your insurance premiums have gone up when you’ve renewed your policy.

The fact an incident has happened, however minor it may be, signals to an insurer that you’re statistically more likely to make additional claims in future than people who haven’t had any incidents.

So, your insurer may tell you to report any incident you’re involved in, even if you don’t want to make a claim. If you don’t, they might cancel the policy or refuse to pay a claim in the future.

If your premiums have gone up after you’ve reported an incident, we’ll ask your insurer to explain why. We’ll also ask whether there was any other reason for the increase. "

When I changed my insurer I didn’t report it, after about a month I got the following:

“A recent check of the Claims Underwriting Exchange (CUE) database has highlighted a discrepancy in the accident or claims information we have listed on your policy.

Important information

If this information isn’t updated, or is updated incorrectly, your cover won’t be valid, and this email is your formal notice that your policy will be cancelled.”

Went on their website, they wanted an extra £10 or something so I just paid up and that was that.

I now wonder if they have all this info at hand on the CUE can’t they automatically fill in half the bollocks on the forms 😂
How about not having a sig at all?

My missus scraped a parked car (named driver on my policy) a few years back, we talked to them about settling outside insurance but they wanted far too much money so ended up going through the insurance. It's still hitting my premium a few years later. Probably going to cost similar in the long run than what they were asking for, but fuck it, I'm glad we did it this way as it was a young driver and they were being greedy. No doubt will have affected their premium too. Cunts.

Whilst IanF is correct - yes I think it’s good. I used PoorBoys wheel
Sealant for years, and this lasts way longer. Follow the destructions carefully though, and “borrow” some cotton makeup pads as what comes with the kit isn’t sufficient IMHO.

And also - where are the (motherfucking) new wheel pics? :evil:
