I do wonder whether the ceiling on battery tech is higher in terms of energy density than fossil fuels? Would be very interesting for the service station industry if they could say make a normal car with a 600 mile range or so. Few people would need to stop, footfall must be dropping anyway is it as people making local journeys just top up the battery at home?

It's a total non story this. The EU stepped back from 2035 only this year so there won't have been any material impact to manufacturers by the UKs decision only 4mo later that won't already have impacted them earlier this year

Gram for gram, no - petrol is significantly more energy dense than any battery tech we've come across and (with current chemistry - IE not talking about nuclear batteries etc) that can't change due to just plain old physics, as far as I know.

That said, we aren't getting all the energy out of the current tech, and you can just have a vast proportion of the floor of the car be batteries so physical size can make up for the lower energy density, so it's not as cut and dry, etc - I don't think a normal EV car with 600 mile range should be outwith the realms of reality with clever packaging, more efficient motors, better regen charging etc, active aero etc, it's just harder to get there at the moment.

Edit: Apparently Lithium-Air batteries are close to the energy density of petrol, but they're far from being a practical reality outside of the lab as yet.

Germany stepped in at the last minute and scuppered it. They'll now allow for the sale of ICE vehicles beyond 2035 if they're adapted for alternative fuels, IIRC.

Maybe energy density is the wrong term, but yeah, compared to ICE it's very new tech so you'd think that 600 miles was feasible. In which case how many people are going to bother stopping at services? A few cups of tea here and there and a no fuel are going to make them a bit of a white elephant.

Driving back from the north I stopped at one of the M25 services to buy my dog chicken nuggets - took a picture of THE FUTURE

That’s actually as I was about to leave - in the time it took me to visit the toilet, take my dog for a walk, buy nuggets, feed them to him and leave it moved forward by 2 cars. And then another 30 mins to charge the darn thing.

Also shame on the other manufacturers. In 2014 when I first started noting public chargers with the i3 there were just a pair of Ecotricity ones at each services - almost a decade later and aside from Tesla chargers it’s no different.

I think the point is that others of different political stripes (whether in the UK or EU) have suggested these things. The French are proposing banning all internal flights for example.

Thing is - you couldn't trust the slimy weasels to stand by a single word of any pledge they make so they may as well be pissing into the wind.
