It seems the cost of hiring a electric car is quite a lot cheaper than a shit small petrol one. About £200 over 10 days cheaper. On Hertz site anyway.

Of course, another benefit of Brexit is you can't take a hire car out of the country anymore, so that idea is bolloxed, but it was interesting that they seem so much cheaper to hire. I suppose there's less maintenance required.

Quite tempted to have a Polestar 2 for a long weekend now, just for the lols.
That’s a limitation of Hertz. Other providers (Europcar for example), you just have to pay additional insurance
Then get arse raped by lying fuckwits upon your return.

Dave!
Video outside of car when collecting and dropping off. They probably charge exorbitant rates for real damage though.

I always do a video lap of a hire car when picking up, never had any issues returning one.

My video recording habit even netted me £125 from Kwikfit on my own car once where I showed that they'd damaged my alloy (I had/have perfect unkerbed alloys and took a photo of each in their carpark before - they then drove the car out after changing the tyre with a chip on one of the spokes.)

I’ve got a Tesla 3 fvckin quick edition (0-6 3.3s!) for a week in Portugal. Drove down from Lisbon to Quarteria today and thought it was competent, powerful enough and range/eta were good over a 240km journey. Has adaptive cruise control with lane assist to zero mph that worked seamlessly. (Yes, I know they call it something else) Only issue was if you indicated, it turns off the lane keeping but doesn’t turn it back on!

However, ignoring the countless number of screens and options, plus taking an inordinate amount of time to get the bloody thing into drive, the biggest take away was when (on the autopilot page, I think) I noticed it was in “chill” mode. Other option is “Sport”…… holy fucking shit !!!! It’s insane! The slightest, and I mean slightest; I’ve just driven it 200km+, enjoy one foot driving and have driven lots of elec vehicles now so felt I was knowledgeable about elec cars “get up and go!”, flex of your right foot simply puts the world into reverse as you manically (autocorrect corrected magically but seems apt too!) appear at the next place you need to brake.. sorry, I mean BRAKE!!

It’s terrifying for any other adult in the car, my 14yo daughter found it hilarious, and will definitely damage necks/relationships if you decide to see what it will do on this straight..

It’s got a massive boot, two big bins in the middle and swallows a lot of junk,. A sensible choice if you need a family car and have no pets bigger than a cat.

I hate it (and Musk) and it’s shoddy build quality, but also desperately want one.. I’m sure the novelty will wear off, but I really think this is the best family transportation device out there.. and I used to say that about the M5!
Cheers,

Ian

It will let you do some really stupid shit if you stick it in track mode.

Sigh… I’m going to have to now, aren’t I!? I was cruising at 130 today and lots of cars (mostly German manufacturers) came past at delta 30+.. not sure I’ve seen any traffic police or cameras either

Right! Need to find my own little Pike’s Peak 😈

Dyno mode is even better as it totally disengages all electronic assists and allows you to threaten licences and limbs with four wheel wheel spinning terror.

Unless you want to make the mini not mini, how are you going to fit more batteries in to increase the range?

Unless they’ve made the body out of lead, it should be a relatively light car with the battery pack being the heaviest component. The battery pack is about 25% of the total weight of a modern car. Should be considerably more on a restrooms Mini, but guess I’m wrong?..

It’s not the weight, it’s where do you physically put them?

Must full evs have them under the floor. You can’t do that on a retrofit, if you could you’d have to make the whole car taller to be able to fit people, and you can’t go closer to the ground because they’re low enough already, and given the small footprint how many cells would actually fit in?

Tiny engine bay will be mainly full of motor. Small boot usually has a tiny tank on one side.

Unless you’re going to make it a two seater or have no luggage space how do you increase range?

You’d expect this thing will have some mega chassis bracing taking up space too given that it’s expected to handle about 5 times the power of an original car

New world record for 0-62mph in an EV

https://arstechnica.com/cars/2023/09/th ... -0-62-mph/

Yes, it is a small single seater that's built for this only, but still. Less than a second!

Yes, it is rather undramatic. But, for context it gets to 62 so quickly you could (ignoring the stopping bit) do that in your hallway.
