Went to my local TIPEC meet last night at The Motorist in the 928. I was surprised by the amount of attention it got, including a pair of young lads who didn't even know what it was!

Decided to go out for a drive with some of the guys to put some reliability miles on it. About 45 minutes in, I lost all power and the car rolled to a halt and the engine cut out. Tried to restart and it was cranking but not even remotely trying to catch. Bridged the fuel pump relay and the pump ran, so I swapped the horn and fuel pump relays and it then refused to even crank. Tried a few other things but nothing worked and had to be recovered and eventually got home at midnight.

This morning, I checked the actual fuse/relay diagram I had in the house with the one I'd downloaded on my phone. It was wrong. I'd swapped the fuel pump relay with the starter relay. 5 minutes later, the car fired up first time. Looking back, it was kind of obvious what I'd done, but at the side of a dark road with a non-functioning car is not when my thinking is at its clearest. I'd also planned on buying a stock of relays (they're bog standard 53 relays and are £5 each), but hadn't got round to it. I've ordered 5 this morning.

Drove the car to Strasse and it's now having new engine mounts fitted.

My wallet is sulking as I told it I am prepared to pay for a replacement if needed, it has offered my credit card as a sacrifice.

I did a naughty thing this evening. Was behind a very long queue of cars doing about half the speed limit, at which point a Mondeo overtakes me and the Volvo in front of me. Perfectly safe overtake if not a bit pointless as there's another 40 cars in front. I've never seen someone get so angry over an overtake, the Volvo driver was flashing his high beams and gesticulating for a good few minutes. Highly amusing. Another few miles later and the Volvo driver has now dropped some 500 metres behind the Mondeo and there's a dead straight bit of road with no oncoming traffic. I couldn't resist
Again he went fucking mental, high beams strobing and arm waving. Made my evening that.

I remember going to a Porsche dealer with my dad years ago and we were chatting to one of the sales guys who asked "was that the 4 cylinder one" when we mentioned the 928s he used to own

Life lesson, really, if you're rushing and tired take the car you care less about... Anyway its going in for the other rectification work so I'll have them do the wheels at the same time - I'm sure they'll be happy to fix them for double the going rate

Watching a Matt Jones YouTube the other day, they'd bought some old cars for hooning around his farm. Bearing in mind that Matt is around 30, has been into cars and track days for many years, has a Nomad and a Mclaren 675, Ben turned up in a 944 and Matt didn't have the first clue it was even a Porsche.

What do they even teach kids these days?!!

Took my son to a birthday party early this morning and managed to kerb two of the wheels on the 911. I couldn't even let rip on the expletives with the 7 year old the car. Life lesson, really, if you're rushing and tired take the car you care less about... Anyway its going in for the other rectification work so I'll have them do the wheels at the same time - I'm sure they'll be happy to fix them for double the going rate

Chance to change the colour from black…?

Do you have the surround cameras? I ordered them for my wife’s Macan to try to preserve the wheels but frankly I don’t think they’re very helpful. Too much info with two images on screen plus the beeping.

I adjusted the window angle back as far as it will go, and I also - eventually - waggled the seal back into place all along its length. This was a right old faff. It's not abundantly clear in this photo but the lip above the screwdriver needs to locate inside a lip in the shiny black trim above, while the lip below remains on the outside. The window now closes properly at last.

I took it to Waitrose and got an excellent wide parking space in the shade

It has also come to my attention that the "SJ" wing badges aren't original. Factory badges are metal and are actually recessed into the wing; mine are just stickers. So I want to remove them but I'm scared of what state the paint is in underneath I'll let them get nice & hot in the sun today and then see if they want to come off.

Took the ‘sud for a run yesterday, it’s actually not that bad in the heat as long as you keep moving. After 30 mins or so the floor around the centre tunnel is definitely pretty warm, would not be much fun sat in traffic, but you do get decent direct air flow from the bonnet scoop to the two outside fresh air vents.

Temperature seems to sit a little higher than usual, a touch under to 100c line on the gauge, although it does have a stretched scale and I’m not entirely sure how accurate is anyway.

Had a new radiator a couple of years ago, runs a pressurised system and doesn’t seem to cause any issues. Left it idling for 15 mins while it was still 30c out, fan cut in fine and it never went over the 100c line.

Maybe I’m just being paranoid.


Still no luck finding a heater matrix, been wondering whether I could use an oil cooler as one? It’s a very simple shape with outlets at opposite ends of the same side. It might not have the fun density of a proper unit but should still transfer some heat, that’s their job after all. Not like I’m going to daily drive it in the depths of winter anyway, would just be nice to have some warmth for chilly days or demisting.

Good lord, if they’re stickers they definitely need a trip to the bin. Given the colour of your car I’m sure you’ll be fine removing them. If it had been red I wouldn’t have been so confident!

Hopefully it’s not had a quick mask up and paint around everything tidy up at some point

Haven’t even taken it out to look yet from the bit you can see through the heater box flap the ends look pretty crusty and corroded.

Lawnmower carb stripped, cleaned and reassembled so that now runs smoothly with no hunting.

New fuel pump fitted to the e36, generic walbro one, seems to run fine but not entirely happy with how it sits in the holder, the original rigid plastic pipe had to be cut to remove the pump, the supplied rubber hose just isn’t flexible enough. Think I might bend up a piece of rigid metal pipe and flare the ends to use short sections of hose as joiners.

Stickers off. They virtually fell off once I started, and the adhesive all cleaned off no problem. There’s a slight shadow though, more visible IRL than in the pic. I’ll have to live with it.

Overall appearance with / without ? I’ve compared before & after photos and I really don’t have any strong feelings on it. Genuine ones are probably quite nice things. But the car also looks fine without them. Shrug.

Mainly to get as close as possible to the shrubbery on the left and have lots of space to open the door between me & the next car (to the right).

And that bit of the car park is a little triangle, it was a lot easier to dart straight in when I spotted it.

And it's not got parking sensors and I'm not totally used to it yet.

Ferrari wing shields must have been a genius bit of marketing in that people will pay a ridiculous amount for them for no real benefit. And Ferrari are very clever for recessing the shields in the wing so you can’t just stick a badge on if you want it to be authentic.
Perhaps something for BMW and Mercedes to learn with regards to M / AMG badges on their proper cars
