Curious how the Sun took a second hand story, and after the actual involved party told them not to publish because it was bollocks made up by their estranged family, they published anyway.

And by coincidence there was a rather revealing story about predatory MPs last week and also that Johnson is hiding evidence about early COVID responses so it's really handy that an absolute non-story with no real public interest (in the legally protected sense - nothing illegal happened, regardless of your moral position) but lots of salacious gossip was pushed to help keep things quiet.

One hell of a coincidence, that.

It was a non-story from the word go. Shameful behaviour by a tabloid rag (but what else can you expect?) and, as you say, a convenient distraction from actual news.

Newspapers - but particularly the tabloids - exist to sell you stories. The biggest tragedy is that so many morons still buy their rags and click on their web links.

I’ve not been following this story really closely but it seems like the sun has tried to drum up a story out of nothing and it’s starting to stick.

At this point I feel sorry for the man, seems to have made some poor decisions around speaking to folk on social media but mot much more.

If it had just been a story at the beginning "Huw Edwards paid for gay porn" then I don't think it would be that much of a big deal. What's turned it into a big story is the 5 day who-done-it murder mystery involving loads of celebrities.

The fact Huw waited to claim it until after the police cleared him of any illegal activity makes it pretty seedy though.

to be fair, I can't remember where/why I got to that conclusion. Probably the WhatsApp groups that named Huw in memes ages ago (sun/mon this week I think).

I seem to remember being a difference in the way it was being reported which seemed to suggest it was a male, although I don’t think where has actually said it.

Plenty of references to younger men - no idea how informed those are, but if he had been having affairs with 20yr old females then would this have been blown up by The Sun in the same way?

All I have seen alleged so far is that Huw has bought pictures (Onlyfans?) and contacted people through a dating app (Grindr?) There are a few allegations surfacing of inappropriate behaviour to a few colleagues at the BBC, which seem to amount to flirty messages. I haven't seen any suggestion that he's even met up with anyone he's messaged, though you'd expect that to be the natural progression. Basically he may have cheated on his wife - or it may have been with her blessing. This runs the risk of becoming a Caroline Flack story though, with so much harm caused to the individual at the centre of it - way out of proportion to his wrongdoing.

Or The Sun had a story about a 20yr old who was in touch with HE about 3 years ago, without saying that he's nearly 21 now and the 'about 3 years' is actually just late 2020 and he was never under 18 at any relevant time...
