Yeah, that's always a concern, although apparently it mostly affected earlier cars, and ragtops are less susceptible due to having extra reinforcement from the factory.Zonda_ wrote: Thu Aug 09, 2018 4:38 pmMake sure you get the rear subframe checked, mine was fooked and wrote the car off.Beany wrote: Thu Aug 09, 2018 4:35 pm I'll probably not be using it to commute given I only live a touch under two miles from work - unless the weather is fucking terrible, or I plan to head off somewhere straight after work.

My E46 M3 was fine after 140k. Don’t worry about it.Beany wrote: Thu Aug 09, 2018 5:02 pmYeah, that's always a concern, although apparently it mostly affected earlier cars, and ragtops are less susceptible due to having extra reinforcement from the factory.Zonda_ wrote: Thu Aug 09, 2018 4:38 pmMake sure you get the rear subframe checked, mine was fooked and wrote the car off.Beany wrote: Thu Aug 09, 2018 4:35 pm I'll probably not be using it to commute given I only live a touch under two miles from work - unless the weather is fucking terrible, or I plan to head off somewhere straight after work.

Check the hydraulic seals for the roof in the boot under the carpets. If they’re leaking even slightly you’re better off selling the car before it bankrupts you.

Nope.
Sales, good tip, ta. I'll go over the car with a fine tooth comb this weekend.
Just replaced the wipers as they were fucked. And got a Haynes Book O' Lies too.

I just said a silly generic comment about any convertible car. Go enjoy it.

Get a copy on INPA, it's awesome for poking around through the modules and stuff, you can't do any coding on it but there's a lot of interesting stuff to look at. I always assumed it was what the dealers used, but no- they get far more basic scanners. INPA was factory level stuff
I found a video on YouTube which included a download link, I copied both, will see if I can find them. Handily e46 has a standard obd2 port so you don't need a silly adapter thing like I do for the 36s.

Does that mean the convertible has a stiffer torsional rigidity than the coupé?Beany wrote: Thu Aug 09, 2018 5:02 pmYeah, that's always a concern, although apparently it mostly affected earlier cars, and ragtops are less susceptible due to having extra reinforcement from the factory.Zonda_ wrote: Thu Aug 09, 2018 4:38 pmMake sure you get the rear subframe checked, mine was fooked and wrote the car off.Beany wrote: Thu Aug 09, 2018 4:35 pm I'll probably not be using it to commute given I only live a touch under two miles from work - unless the weather is fucking terrible, or I plan to head off somewhere straight after work.

With the way the subframe bolts to the double skinned floor (and the nature of how the cracks happen) I can't see how the cab could be any better.
I dunno how Rich's was fine after 140k, but with E46 M3s, I'd say a decent percentage have had to be repaired for cracks.
If I was buying any E46 with a decent engine, I'd take the chassis crack thing seriously and have a person who knows exactly what they are looking for, inspect it.
If it's not cracked and you're going to drive it enthusiastically, factor in getting the floor resin injected (no idea how much that is now, was £300-400 4-5 years ago)
If it's cracked then it's about £2k to have a re-inforcement kit welded on + resin injection, by somewhere reputable like Redish.
If the cracks are something like over two inches in length, then it's new floor time and I reckon your looking at £4k+ for a the old floor to be removed and a new one welded in.
If you are serious about getting an E46, have a look at some of the visa Redish have on YouTube.

based on what? The ones who’ve shared their issues on the internet? There were tens of thousands sold and Reddish had done about 150 repairs a year ago, no idea how many BMw have done?Marv wrote: Fri Aug 10, 2018 6:13 am I dunno how Rich's was fine after 140k, but with E46 M3s, I'd say a decent percentage have had to be repaired for cracks.

Change in shit-muncher car: Ibiza FR lease gone, Focus lease in.
I've had a couple of Focus' before so it's as expected really, I shall be looking forward to the old Ford heated front screen in the frosty months.
Edit - Only other thing of note is how bloody high you sit in the Focus, like driving an artic... maybe you can lower it somehow.

Re: Your fleet running reports
Is the heated screen the same as the crap I have in my Defender? I find the small lines so annoying at night when it’s raining that I will just replace it with a normal windscreen if it ever gets cracked by a stone.
Noticed that the Rolls Royce cars at goodwood also had it in the windscreen and the front doors! Would drive me nuts.

Re: Your fleet running reports
Mrs mik's last 3 cars (Disco3, Disco4 and current F-Pace) have heated screens. They are great. The wires are very rarely apparent (and therefore potentially annoying) when I am looking through the screen - the benefit hugely outweighs the downsides imho.
