I think the chrome works, but it's not as nice as the non-chrome ones. I'd suggest putting the chrome centre caps on the standard wheels but it's going to look awful, isn't it

It crossed my mind too - I'll try it. Nothing to lose there.

The wheels on the car have been refurbed already in a chrome-effect powder coat, which I also like, but it does mean I'll never find a matching centre cap, and getting a single cap refurbed probably won't match either. So my plan for now is to pick the best condition combination of wheels, trims & tyres from what I've got, have those refurbed, and sell the remainder. Possibly individually as they seem to be worth more that way. I'm collecting the "new" set this evening.

Also - I've ordered a set (non-genuine) of front wishbones. Let's see how that goes.

The compact is worthless now as the original windscreen is being replaced today after a stone cracked it on Friday…

Auto glass have ‘upgraded’ me to one with a top tint, as that is all they can get in.

Need to cram the family in it and drive down to Cornwall later, as the X5 is sitting in a garage waiting for a rocker gasket to arrive and hopefully cure what had become a fairly major leak.

BMW V8 gaskets must be made of old cardboard. They’re all shite like that
How about not having a sig at all?

Unfortunately yes. I just realised that I'm out of date saying 'rocker' gasket, unless I have a special pushrod X5...
It's annoying as the garage had it in for a leak a few months ago - no drips on the floor, just a damp undertray and the occasional whiff of oil. They took ages and ££ to locate it somewhere at the front of the engine and within a couple of weeks it started dripping every time it was run, dumping 2L of oil in 800 miles. I don't know if it's bad luck that it went straight afterwards, or if they disturbed it when locating the other leak.

It's just the innate BMW will to leak. You stop it up in once spot and it'll leak in another.

Yeah, just the crap seals all of a similar material of similar age and same number of heat cycles.

2l / 800 miles is bad though, mine was losing enough to make a mess on the drive and leave oily spots on the back of the car, but didn’t actually seem to use any more than you’d expect a well used V8 to

Right, wheels collected and I might have lucked out hugely ! Very nice bloke, works with classic cars, had been tasked with clearing some old stock from one of the places he works. The wheels need a refurb, I already knew that, but they were still a great price. And they came with these:

Four largeish rubber gaskets. They're not for a Bentley and he didn't know what they were for; they were just with the wheels so assumed they went together. Used but in good condition. Made by Speedline.

Anyone want to guess what they are, and how much they normally cost ???

I gave the wheels a wash and put them on the car, I'm happy, I tried to take photos but they don't "pop" in the photos like they do in real life.

Instead, just for you @Jobbo, here's the old & new side by side, with the correct trims, and with the trims transposed.

Given the prices of cars these days - it's an insane amount of automotiveness for £9k.

Ouch! That's some brand tax.

In Galaxy related news the coolant loss hasn't been solved by a new cap on the expansion tank. Doing more sleuthing came up with a post suggesting it could be pinholes/very fine cracks in the tank due to age, and only being an issue after a prolonged run where everything has fully warmed through. That seems likely as it complained earlier in the week after a 200+ miles motorway run. A new tank is less than £30, so seems daft not to try it.

It also needs a set of new summer tyres, so will order some. Most likely going for Continental Premiumcontact 7 that won the recent tyre test.

I still can’t work out what they’re for. Do all Ferraris have a rubber gasket between the hub spigot and the back of the wheel?
