I am kinda surprised your tank isn't bigger. My E had the extended tank option when bought and took about £150 odd, think it was 85 litres (may have been 95) but for some reason I imagined Bentleys to have even larger so one didn't have to mix with rif raf at the petrol station too often.

It's 90 litres. Fairly big, but doesn't give much range with a big thirsty engine up front

Which reminds me to do a fuel update - three trips to visit family over Easter meant it's had a decent run and I did the first brim-to-brim calc yesterday. Shortly after the low fuel warning came on it took 76.58 litres having covered 327.6 miles = 19.4mpg. That was mostly very gentle motorway with a little bit of A road and a handful of local trips. Seems fair for the type of car it is.

Which also reminds me how important it is to look after the environment. The large boot makes it an ideal car for dropping off some bottles at the bottle bank. I’m doing my bit. Are you ?

Having got middle son to do the cabin and and air filters on the BMW, I did the oil service last weekend. As it's done 104k miles, I treated it to an engine flush too. It had done 3k miles since the last change and the oil wasn't that bad but I decided to run a couple of bottles of Liqui Moly engine flush through it. I'm glad I did as the oil that came out was blacker than a mole!

The biggest issue that I had was that my jack only lifts the car about 35cm and sliding under the front of the car to get to the door in the undertray was a touch snug. I might have to invest in some ramps for next time or go on a diet.

- Tidy stereo wiring so it’s not so crammed behind the unit
- Split the power feed to my amplifier to run a second amp and add a fused distribution block.
- Mount the sub amp to the car so I can neaten the install and just have a quick release plug for the speaker wires so it’s quick and easy to remove if I need to.
- Add a small amp for the front speakers
- Add an alpine sound processor to allow more fine tuning
- Keep everything as standard looking as possible without affecting interior space or practicality.

Dashboard currently looks like this


Sub amp and dsp brain box bolted to the back of the rear 1/4 panel infill panel. Just proof of concept for now, will weld on some captive nuts and brackets for the bottom mounts

Cayenne: two steps forward, one step back. I fitted a new (that had nonetheless been sat in my garage for two years) propshaft to get through the MOT and now there's a noise / vibration from ~40mph upwards that feels very much like bad propshaft I've been under and checked everything is straight & tight etc but no difference. I might try fitting a new bearing to the old propshaft; it's not an easy job but at least I know it's properly balanced.

Is it a UJ or CV propshaft ?

If it’s a UJ one then make sure the UJs are clocked correctly.

It’s a Magnat something or other, would like an alpine or genesis one, or a JL just because they’re what I remember from the period I’m paying homage to, but then I’ve got focal front speakers so they don’t match anyway. It’s not going to win any awards, I just want it to be neat tidy, sound good and look age appropriate. I’m not going to be sat in the town centre boot open pounding out the tunes

Managed to get all four of the regularly used cars washed on Good Friday, and they actually stayed clean for a few days!

Thought I’d killed the battery over winter but a couple of long slow charges and it seems ok again and churned over happily until the carb refilled and the car fired. All tyres looked ok so took it on a run to the petrol station to brim it with some fresh stuff.

Unfortunately driving away it started pulling more and more to the left. Thought I’d better stop and investigate and got an unmistakable whiff of hot brakes. Handbrake must be a bit sticky. Pulled it on and off a few times and seemed ok as I made my way home and got it covered before it started raining. Will have a look when I get a moment.


Bought a new, used uncracked rear wheel for the x5, weighs an awful lot even without a tyre. Two new rear tyres being fitted on Friday.
Will see how enthusiastic I feel about giving them a coat of paint before they go back on.


Filled it full of plasterboard, old timber and assorted Jung for a tip run, supervised by my helper


Removed the front numberplate plinth and fitted my smaller front plate off the mito. Unfortunately someone in the past had painted the black trim, but it had started flaking. As usually happens, some bits came off easily in nice long strips giving false hope as the next section was a nightmare, like picking giant never ending scabs. Then I got to a bit which looked like filler primer, so I guess there’s a scuff or scrape under the somewhere which was why it was painted. Guess I’ll have to neaten it up and try and do a better job than the last person!

It’s almost exactly 3yrs since I repainted the grilles on the front of the Evora - and they needed doing again. So they were done by the dealership at the 3yr service (the first in my ownership), by me at approx 6yrs old, and have just taken 3 coats of Hammerite approaching 9yrs. I’m just masking off the bodywork and painting the front, so it’s a bodge job really, but a 3yr paint cycle is pretty crap.

If I ever have the front bumper off I’d be interested to see if something a bit more robust could be fitted there instead.



The vast majority of my tools are in the garage, but I have had a 21” Ketter cantilever tool box for about 20yrs which lives in the house for basic internal jobs, or travels with me to relatives houses to do basic jobs.

One of the hinges broke recently. This definitely didn’t have anything to do with any of my kids using my tools. Nope. No way. I was looking at replacement tool boxes, and many on sale now have a removable tray, and then a big space for everything else. Good for storage volume, but not for ease of tool location - which the current one is great for.

So fuckit - £buttons hinge, dremel off the original hinge sections as required, drill holes, insert bolts, dremel off the excess thread. Could have made it prettier by then swapping the bolt direction (so the cut ends were internal, but it’s a function over form object, so nah. Rejuvenated!

Progress ? (Bentley content)

Front footwells getting damp, usual culprit is the scuttle drain but I had a good go at that at the weekend and it's damp again already. Have ordered a cover to keep the April showers off while I investigate further.

Closing the boot yesterday part of the inside trim fell off revealing that the whole panel was wobbly. I removed it and it's clear that "someone" has been d**king about with it in the past, a screw missing near the handle, some mounting brackets are missing, most of the others badly glued back in the wrong places. Whoever did it must have had some parts left over so why leave it unfinished ??

I've not been able to find just a single replacement wheel trim for the one that is missing so I seem to have secured a set of four.... with wheels & tyres attached They're the same design as the ones on the car already but in (OEM) (slightly tatty) chrome. Is it bad I kinda like the chrome ? On any other car I'd hate it but I think it works here. It ties in with the grille & headlights. Like this but with the lower grille also chrome:

The chrome works on that, probably becuase it's high-end luxury, it's fine to have a bit of bling.
