Stoopid pointless poill. Best Corner.

Post by mik »

Best circuit corner? Yes it’s a stupid question. This gaming shizzle is addictive though.

So it could be a corner that’s a particular thrill to go round. Higher speed is usually more <squeak>

More often – for me – it’s a corner that is particularly tricky for some reason. Could be a tightening bend, one with a late apex, possibly un-sighted, a camber change, or even a tricky kerb that spits you off if you go near it. A corner with a technical challenge – maybe flowing directly from another so a consistent entry is difficult. And more often than not, one which is crucial to a good lap time. Any errors haunt you all the way along the subsequent straight, or whatevs.

I have failed to mention many epic corners – possibly your favourite corner of all corners - so forgive me. I’ve avoided linking F1 clips as they might be “wow” but they don’t race at all tracks. And dogs cocks I have completely run out of options with only 10 to choose from.
Haven’t even mentioned Fuji, Nurburgring, Portimao, Red Bull Ring, Knockhill, Catalunya, Hockenheimring, LeMans(!), Sugo, Watkins Glen (jeez – the esses!).

1. Oulton Park Cascades. Bump in the braking zone, a positive camber available towards the inside and a very late apex. Curse your mistakes all the way along Lakeside straight.

2. Oulton Park Druids. Wicked double-apex right hander with gradient changes and a tricky entry.

3. Brands Hatch Paddock Hill. The whole straight from Clark to Paddock is a curve, you brake late and need to perfectly clip the apex whilst letting the car run out as you get to the punishing compression. So tricky!

4. Brands Hatch Dingle Dell. Again approaching on a bend. Brake and then turn in before you can see the apex.

5. Spa Eau Rouge. Do I have to explain? Position for the left kink at the start is crucial to carry speed through. No you’re a lifter. Kemmel straight is 3x as long if you fuck up Eau Rouge. FACT.

6. Donnington Old Hairpin. Kinda cheating here as the run through Craner Curves is always fabulous, but the trickier part for me is setting yourself up correctly for the subsequent Old Hairpin. Braking and turn-in points crucial. Errors are relived all the way along starkeys upto McLeans. Painful. Vid shows right & left of Craner curves before you reach the old hairpin.

7. Monza Ascari. Gotta flow, and patience on the accelerator is soooo essential.

8. Imola Acque minerali. First bend is tricky, and you are still exiting it under when you need to brake, drop 1 or 2 cogs and turn into the second, before picking your point to GET BACK ON THE POWER!

9. Silverstone Maggots/Becketts/chapel. Impossible to separate the 3 bends as they all flow into each other before you reassess your life choices along Hangar Straight.

10. Mount Panorama Frog Hollow/Sulman Park. So feckin technical. How do you really choose one part of The Mountain? A lesson in controlled aggression. Must let the car run and fight the desire to over-drive it with big steering/power inputs. Using ALL of the track is so difficult with that FUCKING MASSIVE BARRIER on your right.

Has to be Eau Rouge or Corkscrew.

I can feel the Gs coming out of Corkscrew on Forza

I can't imagine how satisfying it is when everything goes right driving through it irl.

Yes, Corkscrew is another belter. I struggle to get a good marker for braking. Corner immediately after it is also very tricky - I favour a wider initial entry, but this guy tucks it in nice and early - need to try that.

I usually stay out wide coming up the hill do some braking before the car goes light and settles down again, then turn in, manage traction as it goes over the cliff and nail it coming down the other side. The last two corners at Laguna Seca are horrible, I don't think I've ever taken that last left onto the main straight well.

Watching late brake moves in MotoGP or WSB is awesome there. Much better than cars for me.

You haven't mentioned the Corkscrew?

Also, you haven't mentioned having not mentioned any parts of Cadwell Park?

Spa is a pretty good track for low and high downforce cars. Low downforce Eau Rouge, high downforce Pouhon. If it weren’t for the bus stop chicane it would be perfect. Chicanes just ruin the flow of a circuit. See Monza, blighted by 2 of the horrid things.

Paddock hill bend - meh, it’s just terminal off camber understeer waiting for an eternity for the car to grip up.

Laguna Seca corkscrew - braking point is the gantry thing just before it. I don’t enjoy it that much on a video game though, it’s just smashing the car over the kerbs as much as possible without spinning/corner cutting.

Red Bull Ring - probably my favourite track overall, elevation change, good for overtaking, flows well, no stupid chicanes. Second half of the lap is just perfection.
How about not having a sig at all?

The 90 degree Scalectrix tight corner piece is best. It’s the one corner which thwarts those annoying people who just keep the controller power constant.

I'll let you off this once.

To answer your question that I'm sure would have followed though - the section at Cadwell Park, out of the bottom of Mansfield, up through the Mountain and Hall Bends is one of my favourites of any I've driven. There's so much time to be had through Hall Bends in particular and it's remarkable how much ground you can make up through there if you get it right.

However, Coppice is the one corner that really demands commitment. I was never, ever happy with how I went through there. Fully pinned was required, but when you can't see the r-ght hander exit at the summit it always felt like a leap of faith.

Mountain "air" and Hall Bends are great. I don't think I've every got the line through the Hairpin correct though.

Post relating to Laguna Seca - looks like considerable extra tarmac added to turns 5 and 9. Notice Franchitti is the first commenter.

I guess we’ll see loads of new lap records appearing.

Edit - I CBA finding “before” comparison images, but this vid calls out the corner numbers - these are both awkward bastards on sim racing - very easy to run wide on both and the original layout punished you accordingly.
