Moral dilemma

Post by mik »

Hypothetical question.... imagine you found a bag. Not somewhere really busy like a city or on the underground. Lets say it was in a village. Lets say it was... I dunno.... in Scotland somewhere. Just lying there in a not-very-obvious spot. Just around the corner from the pub. And it contained £2.5 million in cash. Unmarked used bills. no big denominations. Non-consecutive serial numbers...

It's not your bag. You have your car with you.

So we've all seen films like No Country For Old Men..... but....what would you do?

Option 7... Grab it and hide it at home/work/your mum's house. Bleed contents off slowly.

Sounds like the start of so many tv shows/movies and we all know how those end. I think we all know enough from those shows that its definitely a bad idea, let alone the fact now we're almost in a cashless society and there's cctv everywhere along with our movements tracked by our phones to within metres every moment of every day.

Take it home and get out the country with it within a couple of days and you might be golden?

Hypothetically, if someone was looking for a loan of cash to build a house, is that something you could now hypothetically offer as a service?
Cheers,

Mike.

Get someone in retail to take you on as staff and run the money through their till, get it back as a salary. You'll lose some to tax and you'll have to give the business owner a cut but free money is still free money. You just have to hope you're subtle enough that no one gets suspicious

Hand it in to the police.. if no one claims it (unlikely as it’s obviously from nefarious activities), then they give it back to the finder if they can’t prove it came from dodgy dealings. Just don’t tell the missus/ex/kids 😁

Worry about the criminal gang who have their claws into the local police and will very quickly find out who handed it in later yeah? ;)

It is missing an option: "donate £500k to the Tory party in return for a PPE/whatever contract worth £100m.". Money is now clean, good RoI and you're automatically cleared of any fallout as your new political pets dream up a distraction to take the focus away. Might fail the morality bit though.

Get old and rich and become disalusioned with your choice years into the future.
Give £20 to a homeless man and feel better.

Option 7 obviously - small issue is weight.

Assuming £20 notes as per "no large denominations" it would weigh something like 125kg and if it was £10 notes double it and obviously quadruple it for £5 notes.

So somewhere between 125kg and 500kg to shift discretely and stash!

Having considered this, I absolutely wouldn't want to do anything illegal.

If I happened to see that money and DEFINITELY DID NOT take it home, I'd probably change careers the following day, because I've always dreamed of running a hand car wash and a nail salon. They're low-cost to start up, and easy to run. I'd probably start one of each in the local area, turning them from dying businesses into highly successful operations over the course of a couple of years. Once turnover has exceeded a arbitrary target of... let's say £2.5m, I'd sell the businesses and move onto something else.

Would be great to find out if any ever did pick up that cash.
