Watched tonight - way funnier than I was expecting, and really liked the "feel" of the way they put the film together. Felt about 15mins too long to me, but other than that it was excellent.

I struggled with this one. Took 4 sittings to finish it. It is, no doubt, beautifully made, very clever and the acting is top notch but I couldn’t shake the feeling that it’s just daft.

I’ve decided that it is just bonkers.

I wouldn’t watch it again

It did really well at the oscars, must've been wild for Ke Huy Quan. Doesn't act for 20 years and wins an oscar.

We watched it the other night and were really underwhelmed. We turned it off with about 30 mins to go. Staggered that it won Oscars, especially against AQotWF. That was an outstanding movie experience.

I've not seen All Quiet on the Western Front yet but Everything Everywhere all at once thoroughly deserved it's oscars imo.

Need to put a character limit on move titles though.

I watched EEAAO and really enjoyed it. I'm off to see The Whale tonight and I'm planning to see AQotWF this weekend. It's clearly Oscars season.

It is a marmite movie alright

I can see the Acting awards as the cast are brilliant but as "Best Picture", I don't see it.

Same here. It's unique, well shot, well casted, and an ingenious use of a mind-bending concept to tell what is actually a fairly classic story.

AQOTWF was superb. Extremely gritty, but superb.

At the other end of the scale - last night I popped onto Netflix and randomly picked FALL. Intended to be a tense drama about thrill seekers finding themselves stuck at the top of a 2000ft radio tower.

Whilst they did a fair job at times of making it look like the actors were indeed at great height, it was regularly unconvincing. As were the pancake-flat characters. Plot twist at the end was rubbish.

In summary - utter dribble.

I’ll be generous and award it 2 rickety hand-holds out of 10.

We watched Fall at the weekend. I thought it was alright! 6.5/7 out of 10 for me. My expectations were low though.

I enjoyed Fall, was very well done and all you'd expect from that sort of movie, very entertaining.

I ended up watching Wakanda Forever in about three sittings. I watched the new Ant Man in one sitting but fell asleep halfway through. I enjoyed Ant Man more. Not sure what that says about either movie. Both are three star movies for me, but for different reasons.

I think part of my problem with Fall was

that it occurred to me quite early on that - with the length of rope available - they could probably have lashed up something using the same principle as this, and it then continually annoyed me that they didn’t try it.

No idea if it would work with thin bare rope and one shoe etc, but THATS NOT THE POINT.

Next time I am up a 700m antenna I’m going to try it…. even if I am not stranded at the time.

Banshees of inisherin

Firstly, I'm a massive fan of in Bruges, so I went in wanting to like it. And overall I did. It's pretty far from a mainstream movie, but it is beautifully acted and filmed. The pace was slow, but not slow like a shit superhero film that doesn't have a good enough plot, slow like the lifestyle it's portraying. It is massively awkward and even a little depressing to watch.

Not for everyone, and I can't see myself rewatching it like in bruge, but I liked it.

Agree with all of that Rich. It’s very well made and jumps between funny and devastatingly sad with ease. The screen with Dominic and Siobhán by the lake was so poignant there was a little something in my eye.

There’s been a few acquisitions of PaddyWhackery’ness about it but I don’t see it to be honest. That’s the life my Grandparents had.

Ah now I wouldn’t be trusting my ratings. I‘be given a few 10/10’s and gave Belfast 11/10 followed by a 12/10 on the second watching

Banshees is that good. Best Colin Farrell’s been since he was working with Yorgos Lanthimos.

Watched a couple of stinkers this weekend

13 hours something something Benghazi

Started off alright, a decent cast of your favourite meathead character actors playing gruff beardy special forces dudes in the desert. So far so Black Hawk Down. The level of mawkish jingoism is incredible though, it’s so over the top that the last act is almost unwatchable.

Also has the same thing as the Michael Bay movie about those bodybuilder kidnappers. Making something about a horrifying real life event into Bad Boys feels weird.

Jurassic World: Dunfermline

Just bad, by almost every metric it eats shit.

Only saving grace is the dinosaurs looked good and Sam Neill probably got a decent pay cheque to keep making that good pig farming content.

Dungeons & Dragons silly, but in a very entertaining way.

Good cast, clearly had a lot of fun upending a few Fantasy tropes. Mostly excellent CGI (although a couple of bits so clunky I'm not sure they weren't a deliberate homage I just didn't recognise)

Great family adventure movie.

I bought the new Avatar movie to watch, but after 10 minutes I've admitted defeat as I have no idea what's going on or what happened in the first movie. So it's either watch the first movie again or just read the Wikipedia for it before I start the second one. Which all amounts to the best part of a whole day I need to find...

Prisoners (2013)

Hugh Jackman playing a slightly unhinged father whose daughter goes missing. Strong acting and very tense throughout, albeit with a few holes in the plot, which are balanced out by a few great twists that really keep you guessing.

Lewis Capaldi netflix doc

I have no interest in his music but I like to see a wee guy from the scheme do well , pretty good music doc. I have a feeling it started off as a small "extras" project for his second album and spiralled with lockdown and his tourettes diagnosis.

Worth watching even if you're not a fan.

Super Mario Bros

I took the nipper to see it Sunday, he loved it, I enjoyed it too (not quite as good as the Sonic movies) - nicely paced, lots of nostalgic references, the only bad thing was Jack Black's Bowser had a completely unnecessary musical number. I'd watch it again (and again, and again....)
