All this renewed discussion about tellyboxes has got me wondering whether I should upgrade our TV? There is nothing significant wrong with it, it's 8 yrs old though and was never intended as our main telly (it was a hall telly obvs) and whilst it's a decent size it never had a great picture - even when it was a current model. Hmmm.

And why aren't these all cited as metric now?

I went 55 - 55 when I replaced ours, as it just seems the right size for the room, 65 was only about 200 l quid more I think.

Same here, and 55" was about the right size Vs viewing distance for the room. Next time I'll still go 60" though cos bloke.

Aye, it's funny how quickly you acclimatise and start feeling size envy. My last TV lasted 10 years though so I won't be buying again until I get left behind by tech again.

We made the exact came change. G15 Plasma to 4K LD OLED, 42 to 65.

our new Living room is a lot longer so Me and the boy sit quite a way way back from he screen. The missus sits a lot closer but she'd half blind so that suits...

We switched from 42" to 49" when the old LG died and that felt too big for a while. Main part of the living room is about 12ft x 17ft.

I have a 43" version of the same set in my study which is 10ft square; that's a bit generous for watching tv but is OK with the Playstation. The main reason for getting this was just in case the main telly dies as the old one did on Christmas Eve a year or so ago; it is a perfectly usable replacement if we have to redeploy it in the living room.

I am well aware that my choices are at the bottom end of the size curve these days, but they still look a bit big in both rooms even after a year or so getting used to them.

50” Panasonic, bought nearly 8 years ago. When it breaks I’ll get the latest but it still feels ‘new’ to me. No issues with screen quality and it has a really thin bezel so looks up to date.

The smart TV functions are a bit slow and shit and very limited app availability but a Firestick sorts that.

49" Sony but obvs I misremembered and checked the 50" option

Seemed massive compared to the 42" Panny plasma we still have in the main living room. But we're sat much closer as well. The Sony is a great TV and the Smart integration seems to work really well and is.much less clunky than others we've used

As Jobbo alludes to, it all depends on your room size and shape as a large 85" isnt great unless you are a good distance away.

I am impressed with Ambilight and hue strips behind the sofa, which really makes you feel like you are 'in' the movie/game.

It might seem odd but the game changer in our room was fitting the dim-to-warm led spots. The ability to turn them down low and get a real warm glow really adds to the ambiance when watching movies

The 65" 4k Sony we had for a 4x3 living room doesn't seem much bigger than the 2005 42" Phillips LCD it replaced after 13 years due to the bezel and speakers on the old one

I don't think I'd go any bigger than that though given the room size. Film and more so sports are epic on it even with a cheapy 15yr old Samsung 2.1 home cinema set up.

We have a 50” Samsung plasma, it will be replaced with a “the frame” picture telly when we re-do the room this summer. So we can turn it 90 degrees when not watching telly and have nice pictures on instead.

You can, the bracket spins 90degrees so it doesn’t look like a telly stuck on the wall. The TV is in the kids playroom if they want to watch anything.
