£5 says the smartphone app is dead within a year and they don't release the code so someone else can maintain it.

Seems silly cheap when cteks are now £50 for a basic one.

I have one of those, it's been great. For £15 it's worth getting one even if you don't need it, because you *will* need it it one day, and it won't be when the shops are open.

Neither did I until I looked in to the RAC Trackstar one BMW offers - looks like it is indeed still a thing with different levels depending on what you buy which I'm sure will translate in to significant discounts from insurance companies....

Not worth it. Get an Apple Airtag instead.

Smaller, simpler, can be hidden anywhere, no SIM needed, no charging, no subscription. Not to mention it's cheaper. Will probably produce a more accurate signal, too.

To be fair, there's about a billion of them out there now so its not a bad idea for a low-cost backup although obviously they're not going to work great in the countryside I guess.

Yeah, that's the only real downside. It does need an Apple device, but as Mike said, they're everywhere. So at £30 - £35 or so, it's worth every penny IMO.

If your car was pinched from a rural location, there's a good chance the Airtag will find Apple devices along the journey and tell you where the car has ended up.

Not exactly an S5+ with live GPS, but even they have their downsides.

Very handy for the price.

I’ve looked at AirTags for various things. You need to cut the speaker out which is simple enough and then hide them very well because they will ping a stranger’s phone saying they’re being followed. On the quad bike I wanted to chuck one down one of the hollow chassis rails/tubes but was told the signal wouldn’t go through that.

It won't ping a stranger's device straight away; I think it takes about 24 hours. And I'm sure that's only after being near the same single Apple device the whole time.

It does indeed make a noise when on the move, so I just buried then where they can't be heard.

I think it detects if it's going on the same journey as your phone, so people who are being stalked by an unknown airtag in their car get alerted to it.

We've got one in each of the cars, on keys and on my bikes too. Its not foolproof, but might just give you enough notice of something being moved and where its headed to get it back.
