Mik's top travel tips - shaving oil

You've probably already forgotten about using hand/body/whatever moisturiser if your hotel/hostel/parkbench doesn't stock hair conditioner (note: not applicable to baldybastards), but I forgive you.

My next top tip relates to Shaving Oil. (Note: not applicable to beardybastards).

I don't use this at home as post oil-based shave face washing requires two applications of soap/shower gel/sulphuric acid MINIMUM to remove said oil. Which is a pain.

But... when travelling, the beauty of a slim space-efficient tube of shaving oil comes into its own. The first time I used it - I was dissapoint. It did not provide necessary lubes. I was sore. I had however forgotten that - in the same way that sprouts dont mix with any other food for actual human consumption - oil and water do not mix.

Using the revised process:
> wash face to remove dirt/grease/kebabsauce/buckfastresidues
> DRY FACE
> apply shaving oil
> Shave whilst marvelling over the lubriciousness

Amended routine provides exceptional effectiveness and shaveitude.

There is an added bonus that shaving oil is far less, if not entirely unlikely to spontaneously and without logical reason discharge all over the x-ray machine at Schipol airport after you have run the entire length of the establishment in order to catch your flight to Moscow, arriving in a sweaty mess whilst your toiletries expel white wee-wee covering all belts, rollers, 3+ trays and 2 security personnel who unwittingly picked said trays up with shaveyfoamygoodness as you squeal "sorry - bye" and exit the scene, whilst airhostesspersons secure the plane doors behind you and usher you to your seat with a tut or two. But that is another story altogether.

That's a great tip, a few years ago I used Aesop shave serum which smells amazing too.

When travelling it's so worth minimising the amount of stuff to carry, every single gram matters When I was nomadic for nearly 18 months, I cut all unnecessary stuff out of my bag, it was the period that converted me from shower gel into a soap user, soap is far more efficient. I also shaved all my hair off, which saved on shampoo too.

I have a beard but Mach 5 my head. King of Shave gel is the best thing I've used. It even come in a refillable aluminium pump bottle. I use it every day/other day and don't care if it's heavy it is as it's awesome.

No idea when I last shaved, I am indeed a beardy bastard, since lockdown but I used the trimmer bit on my shaver on my face so no annoying itching.

Have you considered a stick and brush? My Dad still uses them.

I tried King of Shaves oil a few times years ago, but always preferred the gel; the cut hairs build up on your face with the oil but the gel carries them away with your razor strokes. But I haven't been arsed to shave for a few years now anyway (not the face, at least). Got any beard trimmer recommendations, @mik? My basic Philips one is fine but I wonder if there's any reason to upgrade.

@Jobbo I’m no expert. I spend more time shaven than beardy as I find the former less hassle. I have a small Wahl beard trimmer, but when I do decide to grow one I find it easier to use a cheap hair clipper I got at the start of lockdown to keep it neat. Other sellers are available etc. Battery lasts fore evah - have hardly had to charge it.

As someone who keeps a beard all the time, I used to buy expensive beard trimmers but when my last one broke I ended up with a wahl one that just runs off AA batteries that cost £7 out of B&M.

Works better than some of the expensive ones I’ve had over the years and if it breaks will go in the bin and be replaced by the same one

We've got a proper hair clipper but that being cordless might actually make a decent alternative for hair cutting at home, cheers.

I have a Phillips 5000 series beard trimmer (also does nose and ear hair) but I'm wondering if upgrading to their more expensive ones makes any difference whatsoever.

I've ordered a Panasonic ER-GB42 from Amazon for £29.99 - wet and dry, adjustable cutting length without needing to swap guards. I doubt I'll use it in the shower despite being fully waterproof because I don't want all the clippings to block the plughole
