Significant.

I've got all seasons of the BMW and it was fine on fresh snow, pulling away, climbing hills etc in last years snow when I was coming back from Edinburgh.

They're not as good as full winters (which I had on the Puma and which were mindbogglingly good) but they're a decent all round compromise.

That's good to know then. Because we've always had a "proper" 4x4 around I don't think I've ever done it. Am going to get a set for the Touring though.

A good set of Nokian Winters on that BMW, on the road would do better than the 4WD tow car you used.

I put new front discs & pads on the wife's MINI at the weekend, all went well but they're now extremely mushy with no "bite", far worse than before. I'm not sure what's gone wrong. It's now fecking cold out there so it's going to have to wait.

Compact got a clean MOT pass. Told him about the cat saga and he said the emissions were really good Definitely drives a lot better now too.

Means I can save doing the brake bits until the weather improves and I do a full rear end refresh.

Mrs mik's E-Tron has been in for some warranty work.

Along with many other owners, we've had issues with condensation inside the cameras for the virtual mirrors. This impacts the quality of the image as the camera tries to peer through a misty screen and the heated feature doesn't clear them - back in December the nearside one was really bad for about a week (like you could see virtually nothing). Looks like the original design has been recognised as flawed - updated camera design fitted to both sides. Image quality is better than it ever was.

If only they could invent else you could use to see behind you. I dont know, like a small piece of silvered glass or something? Maybe put a small heating element behind it to clear most and damp off in seconds.

I can confirm this is crap. It doesnt work and also the spraying mechanism is terrible.

It doesn’t. Hth.

It’s the frost and ice buildup along the bottom scraper seal and the upright bit behind the wing mirror ( maybe a camera mounted on a stalk on the door might help… ) which usually stops the glass dropping. Getting something in there which doesn’t leave a smeary horrible mess on the bottom bit of the glass is impossible.

Both mito and merc are crap in a hard frost for the same reason, despite regular treatment of the seals you can actually get at.

My 996 was unstoppable on Nokians. I'd never heard of them until reading a Porsche bulletin on them still testing new tyres on decades old cars.

Interesting. I based my comments on personal experience with the scoob, Evora, and a neighbour's Astra convertible of all things when I did this for them. Even in the chillier climes of Teh Jockland.

Your experience suggests that this isn't necessarily a universal bullet-proof cure, hence I shall downgrade my recommendation to @Broccers to be "Gummi Pflege or even a cheap supermarket clear silicon shoe-shine pad rubbed over the door seal will often, but not necessarily always prevent this on every vehicle sir (yc)"

I got a set of Nokian winter tyres for my 535i Touring; didn't use them for long and it didn't snow properly, but they didn't feel as 'normal' on dry roads as the winter and all-season tyres I've had since (Pirelli Sottozero, Goodyear Vector 4-seasons) which have also been brilliant in snow.

That was a poor choice of words from me lol

It felt perfectly safe even in compacted snow. I remember coming home from Birmingham and it had snowed heavily, the M4 was closed so had to go over the A465 Abergavenny, Merthyr down to Swansea route. I was the only moving vehicle at one point.

I had Nokians on the XC90 years ago and they were incredible, although obviously that was on a 4wD car. Thanks for all the recommendations, I'll definitely try to get hold of a set of secondhand alloys for them.
