Is it worth buying a diesel?

20% more expensive, so do you get 20% more mpg? Plus delta in price, VED, clean cities.. probably plus how long you want to keep it! Simples

Well I did a 120 mile trip yesterday and averaged 45mpg, tax for the diesels I would be looking at is exactly the same, not sure what clean cities is, ULEZ? Is so there are non that would affect me.

Ah well fortunately I’ve just had a call to say the work venue has been changed so instead of being 32 miles it’s 20 so petrol it is!

My much older cousin had one, amongst many cars (caged Elan Sprint was my fave) and one thing I recall him saying was that he did 70mph once in his 2CV on the motorway and it scared him half to death.

He was being hyperbolic They're no worse than other cheap cars of the era. A Series Land Rover is worse IMO, I've owned both. A 2CV will only just hit 70mph but it'll happily sit on the motorway all day with your foot planted to the floor.

Not quite a comparable sort of "run" in a 2CV I imagine.

Exactly my point. Engine tech has moved on a lot but it's been wiped out by the size / weight / luxury / always driving at 90mph that people "need" nowadays.

But is it with the current cost difference that is expected to increase? I put fuel in yesterday petrol is £1.55, diesel is £1.85.

I keep having to say this - it's the winter right now. The price gap always gets bigger in the winter. By the summer they'll be back to being roughly the same.

And by the end of Oct we'll have another post saying "OMG diesel is so expensive it's <x> pence more than petrol".

And the world continues to turn......
