Beany - stop fucking about and go buy a 330i of some vintage. Bollocks to this diesel shit.

Utter nonsense
- none of Beany's navel-gazing is budget-related. Put it this way - if he had a choice of two different-coloured toilet rolls to wipe his arse with, he'd be sat there for months

I'm leaning more toward 330i (not d) for sure.
As for a day off work, most 330s that look worth attention are fucking miles away.
That, and I fucking hate my job

An automotive regret of mine is never having owned a BMW straight six.

Shurely offset by having sidestepped the whole straight-six thing and progressed straight to the correct engine layout? I mean, I regret not having had a 944, but since I went straight to the right front-engine Porsche, it's not that much of a regret.JLv3.0 wrote: Mon Jul 30, 2018 12:14 pm An automotive regret of mine is never having owned a BMW straight six.

Aye, as much as I've liked my 6 cyl BMWs I don't think I would've picked any of them over a E39 M5.
An absolute unit

I'm quite looking forward to it. Turbo boooooost is fun, but I do feel the need for....you know, throttle response.JLv3.0 wrote: Mon Jul 30, 2018 12:14 pm An automotive regret of mine is never having owned a BMW straight six.
Budget is a bit of a constraint as I would be using the Mondeo as a trade in, and I'm not cash-rich at the moment thanks to my bro have a period of worklessness and needing his bills covered (IE filling his car up so he could get to temp jobs etc) so it's tighter than I'd like, sadly.
This year is turning into a massive bag of crap, but I think a six pot rear drive coupe or convertible would help make it feel like I'm getting something out of it. That's how these things work, right?

I await Rich B commenting on the throttle delay valve on the e46.

Choo - I'm fairly certain that even with the mystical throttle delay valve, presumably installed by unicorns at the factory, the throttle response will be better than a 2.0 TD.

There's a clutch delay valve which most have probably had removed by now, and they have electronic drive by wire throttles which aren't the sharpest or most intuitive if you're used to a cable. Probably a non issue coming from an oil burner. I didn't think it was that bad in our 2.2 to be honest.
Plus there's a procedure to recalibrate it which seems to help if it starts to feel particularly stodgy.

Did you not spot it on test drives then, or did you spot it, and decide not to get one (I can't remember what cars you've had)?Rich B wrote: Mon Jul 30, 2018 2:14 pmyep, I just couldn’t get on with it. Harry - I did have a look and it does very much seem to be a thing, but it was just a quick 5 min search so I didn't see anything about fixes. Well, apart from something called a power boost, which just makes 100% throttle happen at 50% throttle. Which I'd imagine, if the entire throttle input is delayed by a secondary system (clutch delay valve) isn't going to help, other than making throttle modulation a pain in the arse....

i tested one, didn’t like it, tested some more, found they were all like it, tested some e36 M3s, then a couple of e46 m3s and bought one.Beany wrote: Mon Jul 30, 2018 4:14 pmDid you not spot it on test drives then, or did you spot it, and decide not to get one (I can't remember what cars you've had)?Rich B wrote: Mon Jul 30, 2018 2:14 pmyep, I just couldn’t get on with it. Ah, that makes sense then. What's the difference between the M3 and the 330 then, different throttle set up one assumes?Rich B wrote: Mon Jul 30, 2018 4:17 pmi tested one, didn’t like it, tested some more, found they were all like it, tested some e36 M3s, then a couple of e46 m3s and bought one.

If a complex FBW throttle arrangement displeases you, try buying an older car without such an arrangement. Re: Beany's Seriously Impressive Pish and Drivel / Cars he wont buy thread..
M3 has six throttles, normal e46 has one.
Like I say, our e46 didn't feel too bad, no worse than most modern cars anyway. I can't remember if it was an ignition and pedal press combination or something I had to do with a laptop, but it was easy enough.
Clutch delay valve is just a restrictor in the clutch fluid pipe which softens the response. Supposed to give smoother gear changes but I found it made it almost impossible to modulate clutch release for smooth on the go changes unless you drive like a granny or are banging it flat out.
Drive a few, if it was as bad as some people say I doubt they would ever have sold any.

Indeed - don’t rely on other people’s opinions of cars. It’s easy enough to go out for a day and line up a few to check out. That’s where trade sales come in handy, they’re in all day - they’ll invariably be shit examples, but good to go and view without the hassle of trying to tie up diaries with a private sale.
