Sunroof drains ? Strange for it to be as high up as the DVD drive, rear lights are the normal suspect but that would go into the spare wheel well.

Yeah, definitely high up, there’s a few bits on the boot opening which could leak with a gummed up seal or gasket, just need to summon up the energy to start pulling things to bits.

It's definitely an option. I'm not doing 100 miles a day so something broadly in the range of an E39/E60 with a V8 might be interesting.

Yeah, I was a bit meh about those but as a used option they're cheap enough these days to try out. If I don't like it, someone will buy it as they're pretty popular.

They still feel a bit form over function, even though the function is pretty good for them AFAIK - they're not just a pretty frock on a dull platform.

Finally towed 3.5 tonnes and then some with the Defender. It’s alright for the most part but it really needs a big V8 as every incline is a full throttle struggle. And air suspension, I’m sure it would be fine on standard springs but some idiot lowered this one so the jockey wheel may have been acting as a tag axle on the bumpy bits.

Dim dashboard lcd strip fixed. 2 mins to remove the cluster, 10 seconds to remove blown bulb, 5 mins to walk to my shed and locate a spare. 1.5 mins to plug cluster in and test, 30 seconds to put cluster back in dash


I know it’s not that quick compared to some of the modern suvs, but still amuses me seeing a 170mph speedo and 8k Rev counter while the view out of the screen is like being sat in a truck.

I’ve already mapped it to 160bhp from 120bhp which was a new safe limit after I had to upgrade the clutch and input shaft after they failed. 170-180 is possible with an upgraded intercooler but I was told to not do it as it won’t be reliable towing. It wouldn’t really make a difference anyway, it needs more like another 100bhp…

Plenty of LS swap options, or OM606 and N57 possibilities if you want to stay with diesel. Maybe a Cummins?

Honestly, I’ve no idea. It warms up quickly and mechanical sympathy means I’ve not tried to force it. I’d say maybe not as they’re orange advisory lights rather than the 7k red one.

Maybe one of the e46 m3 owners might know

You want torque for towing. Lots of big turbo diesel torque. At low revs.

My Cayenne is 380hp but my Touareg was miles better for towing despite only being 313hp. Because torque.

Cayenne - 369 lb-ft @ 3500rpm

Touareg - 553 ft-lb @ 2000rpm

@DeskJockey As for engine swaps I'm not going down that route, why go through all the cost, time and effort for an end product which will still be inferior to something like an old Touareg which I can buy for much less anyway. I know at one point I did seriously consider a V8 swap but I was on a cocktail of drugs and didn't have the best judgment

@Mito Man You picked the wrong Land Rover dude.

Disco4 was a fabulous tow-car with 255bhp/442lbs.ft & and the 8sp ZF box. The manual-mode paddles were pretty much redundant in normal driving, but were magic to give you a little more control when towing.

At the time I picked the correct car, for me it was basically between a Defender, old 90’s G Wagon (which had 90 bhp) and an ex military Hummer H1 (iirc these can’t tow very much). No idea why I like old army based shite

I still want to scratch the Hummer itch but I can’t imagine I’d be able to use it in a practical sense, and they’re just too much money to use as a farm/woods runabout.

The H1 is horrific on anything but a sand covered side slope. They are truly bad and in-efficient.

Does the Defender not give a recommended tow gear ? Mine pulls 3.5 tons comfortably but hills require 4th and mine only had 120hp ish and 200lbs/ft of torque. My 5th is revved out at 86mph though and at 3000rpm at 60.

On the H1 it’s also too wide, 40 cm more wide than the Defender which would really be limiting down narrow B roads.

No recommended gears but it’s pretty obvious just using it. Even without towing 6th gear is pretty gutless below 60 so I just use 5th for the flat bits and 4th for the hills.
