The loudspeakers on the phone, at full volume, will work though. Don't forget that Spotify has an equaliser for "Loud" in the Music Quality settings

New fuses brought the amp back to creating buzzzzzz. Damn.

But I bring you good news readers.

A casual conversation with a good pal revealed that his 3240PE - given to him as a rather generous birthday gift around the same time I got mine - was not in fact dead, but sitting in his loft - unused for about 15yrs. As far as he could remember it was working fine when put there, but there was NO PLUG FITTED to allow testing to be performed.

He said I could have it gratis, but what sort of dick would do that? So it was instead exchanged for a couple of bottles of FINE WINE (see my other thread about winez).

Brought it home, cleaned it a little, and fitted a BRAND NEW PLUG”, and..... it lives!

Only issue is a slight crackling if you adjust the balance, but since I never adjust the balance - who cares?

I may have good news for you on this one too. I had the same issue with a Creek headphone amp that crackled when you changed the volume (bit more annoying than your balance issue) and the problem is that over time potentiometers like these can develop oxidation which inhibits good contact between the wiper contact and the resistor. Diagram below so you can see what I mean:



Happily the solution is to turn the knob fully one way and back the other and repeat this 50 times to abraid the oxidation. You may get RSI but it worked a charm for me

My Musical Fidelity amp went pop and started smoking recently, so I was packing it to send to a specialist for repair. This thread has inspired me to open it up first and look for some burned out fuses

Next up is working out which driver on my Sonus Faber speakers is making a slight buzzing at certain frequencies and whether it can be fixed <cries in Italian>

The b&w 601i speakers my dad gave me had a faulty driver. I purchased a new old stock driver that unfortunately had the same varnish delamination issue. I sent the original off to a guy who took it apart rewound the coil and relaminated it. I could have just fitted more modern drivers to them but then they wouldn't have been match like the originals. So even intricate repairs are possible by men in sheds

Good hifi is always good hifi, there's zero reason to replace any of my kit, hopefully those men in sheds will be the saviours.
