Yeah stumbled across Lang a while back.

It’s incredible what he can do

He’s been coming up on my TikTok feed for quite a while, has a real stoner vibe, great fun.

Green and blue bits work but the red doesn’t.
How about not having a sig at all?

Wow science is amazing.
The coloured grids completely distract everyone from seeing that those little shits are putting a turtle on a train track.

And me, unless I zoom out a long way. It’s also not a black and white image if it has colour added. You might as well point out how amazing it is that there are only three colours on your phone screen.

Peter is correct of course.

See I find the statement you like his drumming interesting. There are four types of drummers - showboaters, technicians, those with feel/musicality and talentless hacks like me who have none of the first three. I've been having interesting conversations with drummers recently about how on YT you can be brilliant but if you look lifeless doing it, no one watches. This fella to me is just total showboating what he's playing isn't that hard, it's at times not musical, but he'd look great in a stadium doing it and people buy into that.

It's also worth noting that the very best drummers are the ones who combine more than one of those three attributes.

Thomas Lang is a machine and definitely among one of the most technically gifted people out there. I can entirely appreciate what he's doing as mind blowing but I don't find much of it very musical. More on that in a second...

You mention Danny Carey - if you want an understanding of some of his best known parts, watch this done by Brandon Teows of Drumeo (himself a genius for being able to learn and play parts by so many different drummers of different styles.) It's obvious from the video he's at times struggling a lot to keep up with what DC does which is really saying something. And if any of you have done any music reading, you'll understand the different time signatures with different limbs bit as mental.

Onto the musicality for a moment - if you want technical proficiency AND feel then Gavin Harrison is worth a look at:

And my absolute fave Nate Smith who just oozes feel and groove so much you forget what he's playing is actually, very, very technically different. See examples below:

OK - I'll stop boring everyone with drums shit now.

:D I haven't watched all the links you posted, but I'm not a fan of the showboating - I just liked what he was playing. Crucially - I make that statement as someone that doesn't play the drums.

(I didn't mention Danny Carey btw - that was Swervy Mike)

Emphatically agree with your comment on musicality though. Many people who are very technically competent are unable to make good music. Like someone with impressive academic credentials who can't mobilise a team, or is unable to communicate a clear message. I can respect technical bass players (mainly 'cos I was never very good), but I love some who are totally mediocre from a technical perspective. One that pops immediately to mind is Kim Deal - who can be emulated by people who have been playing bass for only a short time, but what she chose to play contributed enormously to what the Pixies achieved (IMHO) in their heyday. (And there is a little joke in there if anyone is a fan ;) ).

And yet you use the definitive article to refer to them ...

;) - seriously only Joking...

As for Lang I totally get what you are saying Dave - Incredible technically but I would have no interested in seeing him play. It's good for YouTube clips, thats all.

His session collaborations, accoring to his Wikipedia page are interesting - lots of Pop and Boy bands in there which, given the genre, can't exactly tax a drummer too much.

Give me Ian Pace from "Child in Time Live" from 24 Carrot Purple all day long... :)

That's actually fucking nuts. It looks like a scene from a disaster movie that's just a bit too far fetched to ever seem real.
