People who don’t press the button at pedestrian crossings
While standing there waiting to cross
Re: People who don’t press the button at pedestrian crossings
Does pressing the button do anything other than turn a light on to show you've pressed it?

On pelican crossings you need to press it, also there is a traffic light controlled crossroads by my house that requires the button press to notify the system there’s a pedestrian there. It only gives a pedestrian green light if someone presses the button, otherwise it will continuously alternate between traffic signals.
You’re correct that there are some junctions where you don’t need to press it.

There are a lot of junctions, particularly in cities and towns that call the ped cycles regardless
I'd say that these days it's more unusual in such urban areas to have to press the button to call the ped stage

Does everyone know Pelican stands for Pedestrian Light Controlled crossing
PeLiCon… PeLiCon… Pelican Crossing
I’m ashamed to admit I only learned that this week 🫣

Is this post from a drivers point of view or a fellow pedestrian?

Conversely, people who press the button when you’re already waiting and have obviously pressed the button because the light is on.
Also, people who get in a lift and press a button for a floor which is already lit.

Or people who press the button despite there being loads of time to cross without red lights, leaving everyone sitting at a red light for no reason.
Re: People who don’t press the button at pedestrian crossings
I presume the moan is people crossing without the signal being red? Makes no odds if you're on a bike anyway

I like those people - if they don’t press the button the traffic doesn’t have to stop.Broccers wrote: Sun Oct 02, 2022 11:55 am I presume the moan is people crossing without the signal being red? Makes no odds if you're on a bike anyway![]()

My mind went straight to this, honestly.

You don't see Michael Smiley in much, but you know you're in for a treat when you do.
Re: People who don’t press the button at pedestrian crossings
99% of our crossings in my local area require button pressing
Problem we seem to have is people trying to cross roads about 5 steps down the road from a crossing looking angry because no one lets them cross
They then cross and walk past the crossing
