We talk about how great the commonwealth is, we don't talk about the multiple genocides, mass theft of land and resources, subjugation of indigenous populations all of the world. This isn't ancient history either. We were responsible for famines that starved millions in India in the early twentieth century and the institutional cruelty to indigenous people in Canada and Australia was ongoing up to the 60s and 70s.dinny_g wrote: Fri Sep 09, 2022 11:00 amI don't necessarily agree with that Zed. Britain has a "Commonwealth" which is pretty much a poster for how the country benefited from it's Empire.ZedLeg wrote: Fri Sep 09, 2022 10:54 am That's just not true Dinny, the British seem to have a huge problem acknowledging how much of the wealth and power of the country is built on being absolutely terrible to other countries.
If you think any of the countries you mention get off any lighter you should look up how people feel about what the Belgians did in the Congo.
Put it another way, when was the list time you even heard the expression "Belgium Empire", let alone criticism of it...

Funny - I haven't seen anything negative on my twitter feed. It's such an echo chamber and so limited in its reach sometimes.V8Granite wrote: Fri Sep 09, 2022 10:47 am I think if people dig down then everyone was pretty nasty to everyone else.
Twitter is a pretty weird place in general which is why I went on and then very quickly left.

Pretty much all of has been accepted, acknowledged and apologised for my the British Government and Monarchy.ZedLeg wrote: Fri Sep 09, 2022 11:05 amWe talk about how great the commonwealth is, we don't talk about the multiple genocides, mass theft of land and resources, subjugation of indigenous populations all of the world. I really don't think anyone is denying any of this or not acknowledging it happened or not accepting responsibility. You can't change history but Britain is accepting of it.

We'll agree to disagree I think, I had intended to stay out of this thread as my thoughts on it are clearly miles away from the general view.

I write that badly, I’ve not been on Twitter in a long while, I’ve not opened it since her death. I fully expect to see your apologies and sad face by using the term gammons in the past. I only hope that you are sincere to every individual you offended.ZedLeg wrote: Fri Sep 09, 2022 11:10 am We'll agree to disagree I think, I had intended to stay out of this thread as my thoughts on it are clearly miles away from the general view.
Or, you can accept that times, acceptance and ways of doing things change and adapt and to apologise for the past is a very silly thing to do indeed.
I for one am not offended and would happily cook you a vegetarian BBQ but I can’t guarantee my kids won’t be Gammon Triggered and demand a fiver or two for their suffering 🫣

I'll apologise for calling folk gammon if it turns out that middle aged white dudes with high blood pressure are a persecuted minority that have been materially disadvantaged by their positionV8Granite wrote: Fri Sep 09, 2022 11:15 amI fully expect to see your apologies and sad face by using the term gammons in the past. What do you disagree with? That we as a nation have apologised and recognised our past?ZedLeg wrote: Fri Sep 09, 2022 11:10 am We'll agree to disagree I think, I had intended to stay out of this thread as my thoughts on it are clearly miles away from the general view.
I don't think people really go on much about the Commonwealth being great, tbh. But some people do like to go on about its past ties. Which begs the question - if all the oppressed former colonies have such a dim view of the Commonwealth itself, why have so many chosen to remain a part of it long after their choosing to become self-governing republics in their own right? Even those who are still vocal about the terrible colonial past. And why are non-colonial nations keen to join?
The real answer is, like most things of course, that it's all very complex and nuanced and trying to view it from one extreme or the other is just daft.

Nah , just the general view of the royal family and the reaction to what amounts to an extremely wealthy old woman dying.Swervin_Mervin wrote: Fri Sep 09, 2022 11:33 amWhat do you disagree with? All of what you said is correct by the way.

Have you seen clothes prices at Raging Bill, Bad Rhino and other fat and tall shops, it’s a travesty, Bob Geldoff is getting all riled up over it.ZedLeg wrote: Fri Sep 09, 2022 11:31 amI'll apologise for calling folk gammon if it turns out that middle aged white dudes with high blood pressure are a persecuted minority that have been materially disadvantaged by their positionV8Granite wrote: Fri Sep 09, 2022 11:15 amI fully expect to see your apologies and sad face by using the term gammons in the past.
