Perhaps, but he irritates the absolute piss out of me, so fuck it.240PP wrote: Sun Aug 28, 2022 1:42 am Apart from painting everything white I’d say he’s a CG and has decent taste in cars!

Car Guy or just a guy with a personality disorder which manifests itself as a Ferrari complex with a strange Fetish for painting them all white.
How about not having a sig at all?

Always struck me a wanting to collect them because they were rare / valuable but didn’t know much about them or take any interest other than being pretty objects.

Chris Evans is more of a car dealer than a car guy. The white cars were only a small part of his collection. I sold and tried to sell a few cars for him until my boss upset him over the sale of a Miura.integrale_evo wrote: Sun Aug 28, 2022 2:29 pm Always struck me a wanting to collect them because they were rare / valuable but didn’t know much about them or take any interest other than being pretty objects.
Two of the cars he never drove after buying - Daytona Spyder and an ugly 250Lusso Fantuzzi.
A lovely (and rare) early RHD AC Cobra that he took out once and decided it wasn’t for him.
Miura SV with modern throttle body injection that went out perhaps three times after being finished.
I don’t know if he ever drove the 250 California, but he did put about 300 miles on the copy he had made that used to be lent out as genuine!

I imagine it takes a fair bit of "stars aligning" to take out mega money classics, particularly the convertibles or delicate ones. You need the right event, with the right weather, with somewhere safe to leave it, on a day when you and whoever you want to take out are available...
Sounds like hassle tbh!

Not when you have a dehumidified garage, full time mechanic and a weekly visit from a detailer to sort whichever cars have been used!Rich B wrote: Mon Aug 29, 2022 4:23 pm I imagine it takes a fair bit of "stars aligning" to take out mega money classics, particularly the convertibles or delicate ones. We did have some cars that never left storage after being bought, generally owned by people who liked the idea of a classic but it didn’t fit in with their lives.

Re: 71k Capri
That was actually my thought in response to Rich's post. To have the money to have a collection of this type of car, you probably have a fairly busy professional life. Add that to the weather / event location / availability of attractive person to occupy the passenger seat, and I can see how these things don't get used.
It's different to the folk who buy them purely as capital gains-free tradeable assets, or because it's the "latest thing" and they need to be able to say they own one to be taken seriously in whatever social circle they operate in (without ever intending to drive it), but it's the same end result as far as the car is concerned.
* re: social circles, my Dad has a Bristol 410 (an "entry level" Bristol) and is a member of the Bristol Owners Club, and that is a different world to the one I was brought up in

* further, I just remembered, following Bristol's most recent bankruptcy, the club wanted to buy the spares etc. from the dissolved company. When my Dad was talking to one of the club officials at said social event, they casually mentioned that a few members had chucked in £500k each to help the club out with that

Different. World.

Person / location / event / somewhere safe to park it…
Yeah, must be a real pain to be able to take something from your vast collection out for an hours drive around the countryside. Months of planning required

Some people surprise you. The Sultan of Johor is a genuine car guy (no comment on his wealth or family history…).
He used to drop in on his way to London from Heathrow for a look around. The first time buying the best XK140 I’ve ever seen, insisting that we put 300 miles on it before delivery as he’ll use it, the second time buying a Fiat Jolly to drive around his collection.
The third time he came in we'd got the first production spec Miura (originally given to the bull trainer that the name came from). 30 min later a deal was done and he was chatting about the Jolly being the car he used the most (basically as a golf buggy to get to his cars!) and how difficult it is to get the carbs set up on his Espadas.
Re: 71k Capri
Just found a photo on my phone of the CE Miura with 12 throttle bodies next to your head -
As is wise with a Miura it also had a fully plumbed in extinguisher with internal and external activation levers!
