Can always just be bad luck getting an infection with any surgery.

Even now, 10 years later, I have to take antibiotics 24 hours before going to the dentist. Same with any implant apparently.

Can always just be bad luck getting an infection with any surgery.
It sounded more like something went wrong during the surgery itself as it was announced pretty much straightaway after the surgery that he was stepping down. It takes longer than that for an infection to take hold and be serious enough for the decision to be made that he wasn't coming back to work. I'd suspect something along the lines of complications with anaesthetics or oxygen starvation.

He was suffering from a malignant tumour in a shoulder and was undergoing surgery to remove this when he suffered an embolism.
