Left my Thermapen outside in shade and it was reading 39.3 when I checked. :o

Walked to the post office and nearly fainted on the way back, then a roadman cycled past wearing long sleeved black jacket and a black balaclava. That's commitment.

34deg outside my house. In the shade.

Having a meter with a thermocouple is handy

26deg in my living room. 29 in my office. Suffice to say I've decamped to the living room in my airy PJs because fuck working in 30deg heat.

Well looks like we've peaked here. Apparently Charlwood (just around the corner) hit a new UK peak of 39.1 earlier, with more expected near Heathrow later. But it's on the downhill from here. I'm sitting in the bedroom with the aircon on and the fan blowing at me. Wife and son in the pool with the gazebo covering it all.

It might be my imagination but I think the temp is just starting to drop here. Either that or I'm hallucinating because it is so hot.

Another vote for the damp flannel on the back of the neck trick.

Just went for a 15 minute short walk to see what hell on earth is like. Unpleasant in direct sunlight - feels like you can get sunburnt in 15 minutes but otherwise alright in the shade. Hasn't stopped a bunch of people sunbathing in the local park who are now in various shades of ham.

Neighbour invited me over for a cuppa in the sun at lunchtime.

After about two minutes we went into his kitchen instead.

Fuck this weather

So they’re now acknowledging that Heathrow records higher temps than surrounding areas due to the “urban heat island” effect.
I’m not sure it’s fair to use that as data in those climate change scares the BBC is super keen on lately. Surely even if you have zero emissions but you concrete entire square miles of land it’s going to absorb more heat.

Yeah, you always seem to get higher temps around airports. Charlwood itself literally is atop the end of Gatwick's runway, so a slight breeze will take the hot air from the concreted sprawl of Gatwick and dump it nextdoor.

Went to the butcher to pick up some rabbit heads, passed three people out cycling, the car readout was showing 36 degrees! Some people have no sense.

Getting 40.1 in the shade now. :)

Cooler tonight than last night apparently, that's all that really matters to me. It's very hot in my (home) office, but I'm just a bit sweaty, almost worth it for the feeling of jumping in the paddling pool after work!

It's supposed to drop 10 degrees over the next 3 hours with the possibility of storms. The sky is all clouded over so I'd say it's possible.
