Today I made a minor detour to the bodyshop to pick up the F150 wing mirror cover which had finally arrived from the land of the lawless after 6 months


At the same time a homeless man wasn't happy that my dad didn't give him money whilst stopped at a red light and started attacking the car resulting in the loss of a wing mirror cover. Unfuckingbelievable

It has an array of fragile looking antennas mounted on the back so hopefully the replacement cover arrives quickly.

Yeah will have to make up something. I thought there would be a bunch of red wing mirror covers from scrapped cars on eBay as you see so many Model 3s about now but I think all the reckless drivers are in America

Ah that was the i3 self parking function. The Tesla just tries to write itself off by randomly emergency braking once every 10,000 miles on the motorway.

A stone on the A14 has left a big L-shaped crack around where the rear view mirror attaches to the screen. So well hidden from the driver’s view that I didn’t notice it at first, only when driving home in the evening.

Booked in with auto glass for a hopeful replacement on Thursday (parts etc dependent I guess). As well as a cursory inspection this morning shows my crack is growing.

The binnacle where the rear view mirror attaches contains various (light?) sensors so I am hoping I don’t need an extra trip to VW to calibrate these after the screen goes in.

Descratched the boxster today using this muck. TBF I thought it would be shit and not work but with a decent amount of effort most marks have gone - the main being scratches from an almighty bird shite on the boot.

Not My Car Update

Helped do the serpentine on m'neighbours GT86, which was nice and easy actually.

Done fuck all with my car, but next month it'll be getting some attention - pretty sure it needs a rocker cover gasket given the small wisp of smoke I got after it had been running a while the other day.

Minor fleet update,

Compact now has a set on 9in rears with colour coded throwing star caps. Sometimes I think it looks like I’ve gone too far, other times I think it looks great

Moved the ‘sud today and got a strong whiff of petrol. For some reason the fuel filter had started leaking and needed tightening up. Very odd. Seems fine now. Did a ‘while you’re there’ job and removed the thermostatically controlled flap from the airbox which I’ve got a feeling was always stuck in the hot air position. I don’t have the duct down to the exhaust manifold and don’t use the car a lot in cold weather anyway.

Metro, finally stripped the body loom out of the gti, plus fuel tank and filler neck. A bit crusty but will be fine. Survived the screwdriver test anyway if I’m feeling flush one day I might buy a new one, but would rather not if I don’t have to. The 1.1 body donor has a carb with mechanical pump so no electric pump cutout or return lines.

Hopefully be able to get rid soon, I just don’t want to scrap it then find out when putting the next one together that I’ve binned something I need

Seems like an easy enough job - remove all the scuttle tat, clean out the old gasket, clean off the surfaces, little bit of rtv where the vanos joins, torque it down, throw the scuttle back on, yeah?

Same engine as my old E39 530i ? That used to smell of burning oil shortly after starting. It was oil slowly seeping past the cam cover, not enough to notice it while running as it burnt off immediately but left overnight enough would collect that you’d get a cloud of it all at once as soon as the manifold warmed up.

Same as Harry, the old one was like Bakelite. Fairly easy job too IIRC.

N52 does the same. I really need to do mine but tbh it's only really noticeable during the colder months - as above the oil that's seeped through overnight gets burned off and you get a whiff through the vents.

Finally got a Westermann carbon seat for the 7. First tried one at Stoneleigh kit car show years ago, thankfully I still fit! It's literally the only seat the gets me into an S3 Seven apart from a bag seat.

It's not fitted yet, think I'm going to get McMillan Motorsport to put it in as they did my bag seat and know their onions when fitting Caterham race seats. It's not as straightforward as it seems unfortunately as it's got to be canted back for me ideally, so the front needs shimming which IME means the bolts go into the bottom of the seat at the wrong angle.

Another good afternoon on the Metroid. Being sat in the elements for so long really hasn’t helped some of the fasteners. It was fighting me all the way

All hydragas units removed, ends snipped off the lines. Front brake setup, both arbs complete with all brackets and fittings, complete fuel line, return and vent setup removed.

Going to keep the side and rear glass I think because it’s all gti spec tinted while the 1.1 has clear.

Other than that, I think it’s ready to go. Sad times.
