Advice please.

Post by Zonda_ »

Ok so as a lot of you are aware from Facebook, my dad passed away on Thursday. His car insurance renewal has just come through, my mum drives the car but the policy was in his name with her as a named driver. What do I do about getting the V5 put into her name, will it need to be retaxed?

Sorry to hear that. Loosing a parent is never easy, nor loosing a partner. My condolences to you and your family.

I’d imagine you’ll need to follow the same procedure with the v5 as you would if you sold it- so you may find you’ll get a refund of what tax is left and have to start again

Really sorry to hear that Zonda - my condolences…

I suggest starting with the Insurance Company. They will have a special team to help with this situation and may be able to arrange temporary cover while the estate is sorted out

Good luck with everything.

What Dinny said. Insurance and most likely DVLA will have people that deal with this sort of thing. Give them a ring I’m sure it’ll be fairly straightforward.

Sorry for your loss mate.
You settle up, I'll go get the Jag.

Can confirm DVLA have a team for this (their name escapes me, but it's a specific team to help fast track such things with minimal fuss) and they're pretty sympathetic, I'd expect the insurers will too. Went through this with my dad too.

Sorry for your loss Gav.

Sorry for your loss.

If you struggle with other things then Citizens Advice can be great.

One of the best things you can do is get copies of the death certificate as you will probably need a few.

Yeah, get half dozen, many more self important places like banks etc will insist on physical copies.

My condolences, it's not an easy thing to deal with but they are very helpful in these times (makes a welcome change). They dealt with our situation quickly and easily, it was slightly different to yours as we just needed cover to continue for mum and to add me so I could drive it until we sold it, i'm sure they'll help you our too.
Every place (DVLA, Banks, etc) we dealt with just passed us straight to a team that deal with this day in and out and it's a lot less complicated than you feel it's going to be.

Most places will take a scan or photo of the DC, it would need to be the Extract of, not the abbreviated one for almost everywhere, best of luck with it all, you have my sincere condolences.

Thanks for the help guys, it’s all a bit overwhelming as the moment. For future reference for any on you who have to go through this there is now a system called Tell us Once. When you go to register the death you give specific details to the Registrar and they put it on to this system which notifies the relevant departments. Pension, DVLA etc.

Sorry for your loss, hope you get sorted with everything with as little effort as possible.

I can't believe how much admin there is to do, at a time where you could really do without it.
