Don’t worry Greta, we’ve got this….

Post by V8Granite »

So as my genuine beweilderment of the electric cars will fix all shambles that is currently the popular opinion, I’ve looked at other things out of curiosity.

So last year I put a 25w solar panel on the shed roof, ran some charging points from it and an inverter for the kids pool filter.

This year I wanted to see if I could heat it for free aswell. Now I don’t expect a bubbling cauldron but if I can get the 3000litres of water to be 2 degrees C warmer it will extend pool time a few weeks.

So I built a solar heater after making a test one, that warmed 100 litres of water to 32 degrees C in 2 hours. The final one I built has double the pipe work and a proper K Glass double glazing panel. I’m flowing roughly 4 litres a minute with 1 pump and 6 litres a minute with 2. So in 10 hours on a warm day I should have run all the water, 3000 litres, through the solar heater. Hopefully this is actually noticeable and not just a complete waste of time

Image

The panel is 75 x 120cm and weighs a ton. I’ve used water irrigation pipe throughout as it’s both cheap and the eating point is lower than the flash point of the wood. So if the worst should happen the pipe will fail and fill the panel with water. It weighs about 45kg though which was more than expected.

Image

This is the distribution panel, 4amps of usb power, inside and outside LED lights, a feed to the inverter and a feed to the heater pumps. These are run through the solar controller output though so they turn off at 11V, the 5v loads would be unlucky to kill the main battery but if the pool filter or pumps were left on all night they could hurt it. It’s only a 115ah lead acid leisure battery. I’d like lithium iron phosphate but it’s far too spends for this stuff.

Image

Super cheap solar controller, I think this was £15 from Amazon, I may get a MPPT controller as they are more efficient than this PWM one, if the battery is marginal after a week of use then an MPPT would be worth spending £40.

Image

I found 2 brass bodied pressure washer strainers, it will stop them being knocked by the kids and floating up.

Image

Twin pumps, each has its own feed but a linked outlet, I used normal snap on hosepipe fittings incase the system
Wouldn’t self prime, then you could easily do it with a hosepipe, I think I’ll change this though as it has too much restriction.

So currently with both pumps and the pool filter running I’m drawing 8 amps and only putting 1.5A in. This should be ok as the pool filter won’t be running permanently but I think after about 4 days of all day use the battery would be pretty much spent. So I added a paralell solar connection through a Ctek connector to add our camping panel in which puts out about 4amps on a sunny day.

It will be an interesting experiment and as the plan is to run out next houses workshop purely away from the grid it’s exciting in general.

That is mega Dave.

A mate of mine got quite a large pool for his kids the other day. It came with a solar panel cover that heater the pool - good, right? No as the solar panel cover was blue bubble wrap

I'm possibly being a numpty but - is the filter also a pump ? I assume it must be if it's drawing power. It feels like it would be more efficient if you could ditch the inverter and run everything from the 12v.

I was looking at running an entire hydroponics system and grow lights off solar, would be a pretty cool project for winter.

I finally caved and bought a 240ah Varta leisure battery and PWM controller. I don’t think the price of lithium will drop for years, prices are being artificially inflated and only increasing with the EV demand. 240ah lead acid cost £240 and I’ve set it to not discharge below 50% so it should last close to a decade. A 120ah lithium battery costs £600…

I'm in awe of the skills and effort, good work. I'm quite happy for our paddling pool to be cold, although as a consequence I'm the only one that gets in. Bloody refreshing with a beer on a hot day though... you soon get used to the temp.

We got the same last year - the solar cover looked like packaging to be thrown away 😄 I’m sure it works to retain heat a bit, but we can’t use it because the cats think they can walk on it.

Got a couple of those black sheet solar heaters which you fit in line with the pump. The pump was strangled by them so it stopped filtering effectively while failing to heat the water. I had a brief thought of going down Dave’s route before the water went green and I drained it for autumn 😄

A wise man once told me that by running a hydroponics system and a few grow lights I can then afford that new Range Rover I really like ;)

Nice!
When we do our extension later this year (well if it even comes off as our architect had a massive stroke 2 weeks ago) part of my plans are for the biggest solar array I can get on my south facing roof, a battery storage unit (thinking 6kw at the moment) and a change over unit that will run the immersion heater from the solar array when it's got excess power.
When we get planning consent I'll start serious investigations on panels and batteries as I've only looked briefly.
My mate who will be fitting and wiring it all suggested maybe a pumped system like you've created but I'm not keen on pumping water onto the roof of the house really.
Been mulling over for a long time (a lot longer than the little doom goblin has been in the news for) but only recently had the funds along with the solar and battery prices becoming sensible has enabled the thought to become reality. Hopefully it will save us money in the long term and mean that we are a bit more environmentally friendly.
The wife wants a hot tub (I keep telling her it's just a filthy sex pond) so maybe I can create something similar for that.

The filter is yeah, it has worked really well though so it was the one thing I didn’t want to change. I did try to run the heater through it but it just doesn’t have the guts, lots of flow but no pressure. The wife got some water cleaner for the pool and the water that went in during April was the same water that came out in September.

There are ways to keep the water perfect and crystal clear with good chemicals, we watered the plants with our pool water in the end. I think you can pretty much drink the stuff near, I’ll find the bottles later.

I don’t think much of those pool heater covers but I’ve not used one before.

My system would be….

Biggest solar array I can get.
Switching unit.
Grid connection and solar connection into switch.
Battery

So in theory, you charge your battery with the excess power after you run the house. So all load below 3kw of load should come from your battery. When the load goes above 3kw the switch swaps you to the grid. So you can then use every bit of power you can get to run your house.

I think having excess power go to one particular thing is a waste, set your battery voltage level and use every last ounce of excess power you get. When there is a long period of no sun or just too much load you don’t even notice that anything has happened, you just get an electric bill. This is how a lot of systems in America work.

In terms of chemicals, I just got some tabs and floating dispenser off amazon, but then I am going for the cheapest set up I can muster!

I've read this in various online guides; will make more of an effort this year when I get the pool out. I foolishly bought a fairly big one (12ft diameter by 4ft deep) which came with a filter pump but it's 12,800 litres and the pump didn't really cope even before I stuck the heating thing in the loop and, I suspect, burnt it out a bit. So I basically need to upsize everything to fit the pool volume. For what was only a cheap pool bought on a whim for the last sunny weekend of last summer, that seems a bit OTT.

Poolsan are what we use, very impressed with it. You just have to run the pump every few days for a couple of hours to keep the water moving, not a problem with kids.

Maybe I should let the cats get in the water after all - the thrashing about would stir the chemicals up
