IIRC (and its a long time ago now!) The rear wheel bearings on X308s are tightened to a specific torque, and there should be an amount of top to bottom play if the wheel is rocked when the car is suspended, as you would normally expect to find if a bearing has failed.

If these guys aren't aware of that and tightened it up until there's no play then the bearing will be fucked.

I'm going to put a LARGE CASH DEPOSIT on exactly this. I don't suppose you have an official source for that?

For some reason bmw fitted plain black vinyl door cards to compacts with the cloth seats mine has.


It makes them look a bit randomly plonked in.
So I found some matching cloth in the USA,


And decided to diy it.



While I was there, the handle on the drivers door didn’t clip closed properly, I suspect someone had thought you had to prise it open to remove the doorcard. Handily I have a spare for that


Much better



Then with an offcut and spare frame decided to make a little extra. Too far? Maybe, but it’s staying

Oh, and took the sud out for a run to an east coast retros gathering today and had to stop for an obligatory photo by the Orwell bridge

The old Alhambra has delivered us safely in Holland at 58mpg, although I have noticed the idle was getting lumpy the longer the journey went on. It was fine the next morning when cold, so it's temperature related. I'm wondering if it's a tired injector? Won't know until I get home and put the code reader on it. Fingers crossed it doesn't get any worse before then!

Thanks for that. I've found an X308 workshop manual that describes the process and the ten-men torque setting for it. I suspect they got a twelth man on it until there was no more play. 'sake.

Yeah, the normal fabric cards have the fabric stuck under the outer vinyl, but the double vinyl and I think the leather ones have two separate parts glued together so once separated you can just glue the covering of your choice over the top then glue the whole piece back in from the back which gives a nice neat edge.

I have a pair of JL 8W7 subs, high quality stuff, which I’d been saving for a special occasion. I decided the van is special so today I prepared an enclosure for them, checked all the fit, then when I went to fix the first one down the surround fell apart

Replacement foam can be ordered but I was trying not to spend money and do it all with stuff already on hand.

Took advantage of the warm still weather to paint the awful roof on the compact. I was considering wrapping it but thought I’d give painting a go.


Was going to cost about £60 for a decent bit of vinyl wrap, painting cost me about £20 in materials.

It's all well and good, but that was before you had something else to try...

Seemed like a weekend for doorcards this weekend. I was going to change the front brakes on the TVR but the pads never arrived (another story there) so the re-trim of the door cards got bumped from 2nd place to pole position. TVR trim the door cars in the same carpet as the floor and rear load area and it's awful. I got some Red Alcantara from eBay a couple of weeks ago (was torn between embossed vinyl and this but couldn't find a vinyl I really liked so went Alcantara) and puled them apart this weekend. A similar design to the BMW where the trimmed card is inside the outer only it's not glued together but the removal is probably just as hard as the outer is held on with 3 nuts inside the bottom of the door and involves some 'James Herriot' action via the door speaker hole to reach them!
Once that's off it's just 3 screws to remove the inner card and a lot of pulling and scraping (the are tough old fibreglass things, not some hardboard) to remove the old carpet, the card being left in the sun to soften the glue helps massively (first one took a good 40 mins to remove the second was about 15 mins). Then cutting a piece of fabric to rough size and gluing with spray adhesive to the card followed by trimming the edges with a bit of folding and gluing. All of the edges are covered by the outer card so it just needs gluing well and trimming, there's no magic to getting nice edges as it's all hidden so a pretty easy job in all. Then re-fitting. Pretty happy all in all.
