About fucking time, still see multiple people a day openly making calls while driving, never mind the number of people who panic brake more than you'd expect, which is definitely because then traffic ahead slowed unexpectedly, and has nothing to do with them whatsapping thier mate about the latest drama from the council estate instead of looking where they're going.

But carplay has restricted features and uses the cars UI.

Meh, don't see how this affects my life. As long as I can have the phone mounted for satnav I'm grand.

I do use android auto mind you, and you can do a lot on there, I wouldn't say that it guarantees that anything you're doing is safe.

I use “car scanner” app (like the Torque app) to monitor various parameters on the car when I am moving.

Real PITA if that is no longer allowed, despite the phone being in a Brodit holder/charger.

And like @Simon , I don’t see the difference between using a phone in a cradle - which is right beside my head unit - and using the touch screen on my head unit.

There's a difference between using your phone for calls/text and selecting the next Spotify song on your in car mode screen.

After all most cars these days have iPad sized screens so what's the difference?

As with many things, I suspect that if you apply common sense, you'll not be busted. Unless you're fiddling with your phone in front of the popo then the only other time it's going to get looked at is if you have an accident as a result, in which case you probably weren't doing it appropriately anyway.

Happened to a bloke on Seloc. He had his phone in his hand sat in traffic, cunty cyclist goes by grinning and pointing at his helmet cam. £200 and six points..

I took that as can use it in a cradle but can't touch it, even to unlock it, or use any app.
So waiting for clarification that you can use it as a sat nav (using an app) as long as
- it's in a cradle
- it's set up whilst you are parked, stationary and in neutral
- you don't touch it whilst moving

The new law prevents any hand-held use, as far as I can see: https://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/202 ... m/contents - it doesn't prevent use hands-free, which means mounted in a cradle you can still use the sat-nav, change music tracks etc.

What it does mean is you can't fiddle with it in your lap and say you were typing an address into the sat nav rather than typing a text to get away with an offence. Seems perfectly reasonable to me.
