Funnily I ordered a practice lock and picks yesterday to have a go at it. I've watched enough LPL videos now - can't be that hard...

I did that when I bought our current house. The house (probate sale) came with just one key for the front door; all the window locks, back door, garage doors and side door were locked with no key. So I had to get them open somehow.

Back door was a cheap Euro cylinder so unscrewed the handle inside and snapped it with mole grips. Garage door locks are rubbish so I was straight in there without even picking and replaced them from the inside. Window looks weren't too bad, used a rake on those. The sliding patio door lock was more secure and stiff so took a few attempts, think I raked that in the end. The garage side door was a 5-lever and I didn't have the right type of pick nor inclination, I gripped a snapped piece of hacksaw blade in mole grips and sawed through the bolt while it was in the frame. That was by far the longest one to get through. All replaced with rather more secure versions after discovering quite how insecure it all was

Picking the practice padlock properly is all very easy; opening older, slightly gummed up locks when you can't see what's inside is a bit more of a challenge. Very satisfying though

As a good IT bod, I also have a couple of hard drives with backups in the safe too, so I guess I should replace it...
