That rings a bell and I'm not sure if I want to be reminded of the details.....

John wrote: Tue Jul 17, 2018 2:21 pm I had a z4 for a summer and although it was only the 2.2 it sounded nice (6 cyl) and certainly wasn't the snail people make them out to be. They often have electric roof motor problems though so if you do view one raise and lower the roof a few times.
Same engine as our 320i, which I still think sounded far nicer in general day to day driving than either the 3.5clk or my e36 m3.

Quite a revvy engine too, although we ended up regularly banging the limited which seemed a bit too low for the power band.

Must be said, after having a reasonably torquey TD I'd like to have something with a reasonable bit of midrange shove, so the 2.2 six pot is out.

I'm thinking a simple E90 325c/i or an E46 330c/i would do the job - Z4s are all 2.5s and I can't find any sports in my price range with the nice seats/xenons/etc, whereas there are a few saloons. And ragtop isn't that necessary. And probably a PITA in winter if it's my only car.

I'll probably have more of a sniff around AT tonight and see what's aboot, then see if I can sort a test drive of something.

Don't discount a four door, they can look quite smart in the right colour / spec and drive as well as any of the other body styles.

seem to remember they got folding rear seats too which is handy if you need to load anything long, although I'm not 100% sure on that.

It’s like you didn’t take my Chrysler Crossfire suggestion seriously....

But remember I'm also a tart.

And no, of course i didn't take your chrysler crossfire suggestion seriously Rich. It's a 1st gen SLK in low quality drag, and the SLKs weren't exactly renowned for their dynamics in the first place.

If you were being serious about that, you need to take a long, hard look at yourself...

The Evo forum really is a shadow of its former self. I remember when the internet was for the elite and now they seem to let any spastic on

Nice, but I think RWD is the way to go with this.

Correct.

And stop fretting about modz. Just get something that works and enjoy it.

Yeah, I think I have an idea of what I'm after.

E9X 325i (any body shape really) or very clean E46 330i
Xenons (more prevelant on coupes)
Sports seats (not fussed about leather or fabric, more concerned about the extra support)
not too fussed about iDrive - it's early iDrive anyway so not exactly known to be brilliant, and E46s lack it don't they?

There are a few in the area, I'll refresh my knowledge again closer to payday when I can throw a tank of fuel in the car and spend a day zipping about looking at 'em.

Something like this would tick the relevant boxes, although I suspect it'll be gone fast and I ain't got time to look at it:

Anyone got any tips on specific spec to look for on E9Xs?

make sure the 4.0 V8 is there...

Or, as usual, don’t get all hung up on every fault the internet can name, and just go and drive a few til you find one that’s clearly been cared for. Works for me.

Make sure you take an ultrasonic bath for MAF cleaning before any test drive. And quiz the seller on which firmware the head unit is running.

The nav will need updating, and there will be some coding options to play with too.

Not sure about this talk of the 2.2l in the Z4 not being slow... I had a mate with a 2.5 which was not very impressive performance wise for a roadster with sporting aspirations.

I actually put a deposit on a 3.0 Z4 when I had the e90 330i and when I test drove it I was also unimpressed with that compared to the e90 I owned - the response of the M54 was not on the same level as the N52 so I got my deposit back and decided to wait for a later 3.0si as I didn't want to swap to something with a worse engine (and of course I never ended up buying one!).
