I've done a load more driving now and formed some more opinions. Brain dump:
I love the steering and balance, VERY bmw, definitely reminding me of the M3 now - it seems to pivot around the centre of the car whereas the golf used to very obviously pull you from the front.
The gearing definitely short, and as a result, when you're not "going for it" it seems to actually like cruising at lower speeds than the golf - I haven't had it on a motorway, but on typical NSL type roads it'll happily be doing 50 something rather than 60-70.
However, when you want to give it some, you can slam it through the gears taking it right up to 7500rpm in the same way the e92 used to. The first time you look at the speedo on a 0-60 dash - you're doing 80+!
I'm not entirely sure about the Rev matching - (it gives a blip on downchanges) I've not had it before, so I think I'll just get used to it.
The brakes aren't very grabby - you need a good prod to get them doing anything.
The petrol tank is small - £60 of SUL and it was full - interesting to see what the range will be!
Under the bonnet there's the big carbon strut brace which is cool, especially as it all looks brand new under there too (unsurprisingly, it's only done 4600 miles).
The best feature of all though, is the seats - they don't really fit the car (physically) as they're from the M4 - the lever to pull it forward is basically trapped beside the b pillar. However, they have an M2 badge on them that lights up when you unlock the car!

I'm so easily pleased!
My little boy loves it too!
