RIAT 2018

Post by RobYob »

Awesome day yesterday at the air tattoo. Saw planes I'd been waiting years to see (SU27) some brilliant displays (Red Arrows) and some epic showing off (Typhoon with the F35 close second)

Those things are impressive enough in the (excellent) pics, nevermind seeing/hearong/feeling them in real life

Thanks, I was in plane nerd heaven. Camera got a workout with 400 photos, most a bit blurry but I'm very pleased with the ones I've posted up.

I kept earplugs in all day otherwise my hearing would be wrecked but some of the takeoffs were properly chest pummeling.

My favourite shot is of the squadron 617 past, present and future flypast with the Lancaster, Tornado and Lightning.

Some great pics there Rob. 8)

Chap I flew to Barbados with on Friday approves fast-jet air displays in the UK. He said the Greek and French ones were pretty gash when demo-ing last week, and the Red Arrows always fly closest to the limit. He's ex-RN, so always slags off the Red Arrows though!
Cheers,

The Rafale pair put on a great display but I failed to get a good shot of them.

Red Arrows were spectacular, my wife said they almost looked fake how uncannily precise they were.

The Jordanian team were great too as they were running dedicated aerobatic planes and could pull off some mental maneuvers.

Excellent photos, haven't been for a few years now. Did the B2 do the massive round trip from the states and back?

I've been here since Thursday morning and leaving first thing Monday. Has been a fantastic few days and yes the B2 did the trip non stop from the US.

I can't see the photos yet due to flakey phone coverage in this farmers field :D

The Evo forum really is a shadow of its former self. I remember when the internet was for the elite and now they seem to let any spastic on

Wow, you'll have been thoroughly baked! Working/Volunteering or Spectating?

I'd have needed at least an extra day there to see what was parked on the ground, had a brief look at the B1 before the show started but that was it.

Just spectating for us, not complaining about the weather but we were spending lots of time in the shade.

Su-30 used to put on the best display with some mental tail stands and such like. However it got toned down on the wake of the crash in Paris in 1999. That happened directly across from the chalet I was working the IT in the day after I left. One of the guys got a great series of shots in burst mode which I believe were used in the subsequent investigation, he then had them framed and put on his office wall.

Awesome pics Rob - looks like a brilliant day out.

What's the deal with the plane that appears to have a canopy open ?? (VTOL type ?)

Thanks, still buzzing :D . It's the big intake for the forward lift fan. It hovered amazingly well and pivoted in what looked like it's own length.
