Petrol prices have fallen by 1p recently. So make the most of that few pence saving. Buy a Double Decker at the till.

You need to carefully calculate your prospective weight gain from this - danger of a vicious cycle whereby you gain weight, this blunts your fuel economy and therefore you fill up more frequently, causing more double deckers to be bought and the weight gain and fuel inefficiency to spiral out of control. Before you know it, you'll weigh 45 stone and be getting 8mpg from your V10 powered mobility scooter.

Is the forum consensus a switch to E5 SUL, even in the newer cars that are supposedly good to run E10?

On a dawdling run up to Oulton Park for the Gold Cup meeting last weekend we recorded a record 28.4 mpg in the Porsche.

Regarding petrol prices, for any of you keen on history, I can remember buying 5 star unleaded for my BSA 250 at 36p a gallon as a 16 year old in 1971. There, you all feel much younger now!

Great links as always. The AA one doesn’t show historic prices, the Statista one requires a login but the limited graph shows two similarly high price peaks in the past.

The 928 isn't E10 compatible, but I always run it on Shell V-power anyway, so it's a non-issue. Last time I filled it up it cost me £88.

The XC-40 is about £60 for a fill up.

The octane rating is the same, so no mapping changes. It's the pipes that rot and the tank as well.

There's a 5 year grace period for E5 in super unleaded, after that it may become very difficult to find.

It's Bosch L-Jetronic on my S4. I'm not worrying about it until I really have to by which time hopefully someone more pro-active will have solved the issue!

It most probably sorts itself out then. You could buy a chip which changes the static ignition advance for the 500 so I’d be surprised if yours is much different.

The more of us use e5 super unleaded the better as there will hopefully be a good use case for it still in 5 years.

Actually that's not strictly true. Whilst I imagine 99.9% of cars will cope absolutely fine and you'll barely notice the difference, diluting petrol with 10% ethanol actually lowers its stoichiometric ratio to about 14:1 from 14.7:1 if it were 100% gasoline. Most cars are trundling about for the majority of the time with the engine management making sure that the mixture is running at 14.7:1 (or Lambda 1 for 100% petrol) which means with E10 you're actually running a tiny bit too lean, which will result in hotter temperatures in the combustion chamber. Given that its less calorific you'll also lose a tiny bit of mpg too.

Likewise, modern performance cars tend to run so rich at WOT that it won't hurt them running E10, but if you were doing the job properly you'd map a car for the fuel its running on.

I've mapped cars on E85 and they need to be running AFR's around 9:1. If you tried that with petrol you'd just put the fire out
