One way streets

Post by Broccers »

Is it true cyclists can ride up them in the middle of the road like Jeremy Whine

Yeah, you're allowed to leave enough space between you and parked cars that you won't be taken out by someone opening their door or whatever.

Really, never knew. What a stupid rule. What if there isnt enough space like Vine is moaning about?

Cyclists who work with the traffic do fine, cyclists who try and make a point just make it worse for everyone.

I cycled to work for years and once you learn to drive your cycling is so much smoother and with less incidents.

I've been taken out by an opening door (my fault) and I can attest it fucking hurts. Dutch Reach for the win.

Bike guy was complete in the right here and Van driver is indeed, a twat.

As Dave! said it's about manners really, if I end up on a street like that I tend to speed up until I can find a gap to let people past. I didn't watch the video with sounds but I'm going to assume from the high vis cyclist and van driver that everyone was acting like a cunt

I wouldn't move over while all those cars are there as you just end up pinned between the car and the angry person who wouldn't have given you enough space when they're passing at the best of time.

I thought you were complaining about a cyclist going the wrong way up a one-way street. Broccers, shouting at a cloud again.

Not really Jobson just asking a question, no passive racism or aggression at cyclists.

Being a biker its a little confusing how we can use bus lanes as per cyclists but not go through no entries or up one way streets the wrong way as they are effectively the same mode of transport size wise.

Its a bit of a balancing act between personal safety and keeping traffic flowing, I tend to adjust it based on the conditions, I guess just like driving. So in a busy city, you should technically leave enough of a gap for someone to open a car door, but in quieter streets where you can see there's nobody in the parked cars or approaching them I will ride closer.

I went out for a ride at 6 yesterday morning on quiet country roads. Most people overtaking give you "enough" room - so not the recommended amount, but enough that you're not worried - but what's weird is that on long stretches of road with nothing coming the other direction, so many cars still come past too close when there's literally a whole empty carriageway. Its also alarming when you see them overtake and they're still on on outward trajectory as they go past you.

Anyway, lesson is not to be a cunt on a bike or in a car.
Cheers,

Mike.

Our city centre is just one cycle lane these days, they've more or less ruined it so much so John Lewis is no re opening - this is important as it was THE place you parked, in their multi s car park.

As for cyclists on the whole I have no issue with them and will sit behind waiting to get past safely. :)

I had to pick something up from Apple last week so had to take the car.

Fvck me.

I'm never doing that again. Edinburgh is a total clusterfuck for cars now. Roads closed with no prior warning until you get to them causing gridlock in the surrounding streets. Lots of lanes suddenly becoming left/right turn only with no prior notice causing more gridlock. Half assed "spaces for people" stuff put in on already very narrow roads. Absolute chaos.
Cheers,

Mike.

I follow this guy on YouTube. He lives not a million miles from me.

He’s done some really good vids where he has caught drivers being dicks and/or nearly killing him. I’m usually with him.

However - this is probably his most popular vid. He gets assaulted by a motorist. Most people are outraged at the driver “driving his car at the cyclist” and then assaulting him. He’s been interviewed about it on the telly box etc Trouble is that - on this occasion - that’s not what happened.

Linked further down under my initial comments I took stills to demonstrate clearly that the cyclist undertakes the moving car at low speed and close proximity. That tells the driver he is comfortable being close at low speed. The driver then attempts to move back past - again very low speed. Cyclist drifts out to block him and then goes nuts and hits the car. The stills I have linked to show clearly that the cyclist moves out - it’s not the driver moving in.

Cant condone the physical outcome (although it is a shove, not a punch), but the cyclist caused the issue and hit the guys car, and wrongly accused the car of closing the gap. Yet expects a calm rational response from the driver.

Despite the stills clearly showing this - people still deny what their eyes tell them.

Need to view it in YouTube obvs

You're bang on Mik. The vid is clear.

Unfortunately he also has that stupid nasally voice that all YouTube cyclists seem to have so my verdict was cast as soon as he opened his gob.

On the one way roads in Covent Garden bikes can cycle in the opposite direction - there are signs clearly showing that. It’s madness 😂

@Ascender Edinburgh has been shit for at least 20 years for motorists. I remember parking off George St years ago and going for a meal, by the time I was out, I couldn't legally drive out again. It was all bus lanes but when I checked, there was nothing to say you couldn't drive in after so and so o'clock. So you could drive in then have to break the restrictions.

I very rarely bother with Edinburgh nowadays but if I do it tends to be either the out of town retail parks or park n ride.

Riding primary on that first bit of road seems reasonable given the parked cars and the fact it narrows towards the end. Shouldn't have gone through the No Entry sign though.

Shouldn't indeed but laws are more relaxed towards bikes. You can cycle on the pavement all day, jump red lights, blast through pedestrian crossings, cycle without lights at night and speed through 20 mph zones. No one gives a shit. Do that 5 minutes in a car and you're attending court.
