Dremel or Dremelalike?

Always fancied one.

Never had one.

Thinking of getting one again.

Don’t think I need cordless. If I am getting one then moh powers sounds attractive, so I was looking at a Dremel 4000 with loads of attachybits.

Not interested in a £20 Dreamel or similar, but should I be considering something else that is also of high quality/robustness?

I basically "built"* my Caterham with a Dremel. They are teh awesome.

I have a Dremel, It is good at what it does but I very rarely use it tbh.

I used my dremel last week for cutting down some bolts. It's great for what it does, a good tool to have as it doesn't take up much room or time to set up.

I went for the wired one, as it's the sort of tool you use/need on the spur of the moment to fix something in the middle of a main task, so finding it's out of charge would be annoying.

Had the Machine Mart (Clarke) Dremel-a-like for 15+ years and still going. Mostly use replacement bits from Lidl (except the diamond cutting wheels from ebay). Very rarely use full power, so certainly not needing anything more powerful. Does the job, no desire to replace.

I got a Dremel 3000 for Christmas, used it once so far and it was great.

2% of the time you need one they're the best thing ever. I bought mine 3 years ago - I've used it twice, both times it was the perfect tool. The rest of the time it sits in a garage cupboard.

Isn't that the same for all tools except maybe a screwdriver and a hammer?

i'm assuming you don't do a lot of DIY!

What I (I'm sure like many others) have learned the hard way is that any job where you don't have the right tool is a monumental PITA. Now I just go and buy the right tool for the job even if it's not likely to be used again for a long time. It's paid dividends a couple of times where I needed a tool and had it from a previous random task.

i'm assuming you don't do a lot of DIY!

I do a bit, the point I'm trying to make is that all the random tools occupy another 2% on the spectrum up to maybe 50%, the other 50% is those two tools.

If you haven’t got an oscillating multitool but one of those first, my one of those is invaluable on a regular basis, even outside of my job

I don't think Dremel are much better quality than the clones, but their aftersales is good - sent off a basic one that had stopped working and got a whole new (better) kit back a couple of days later.

I use the little sanding spindle things a lot, and the little metal cut-off wheels for jobs where a 4.5" angle grinder is overkill.

Now I need to get my Bosch drill replaced - sometimes you pull the trigger and nothing happens, regardless of battery charge. Beyond annoying and obviously its out of warranty now.

Could just need new motor brushes, worth taking the back off and checking as usually they’re only £5-10
