It’s to remove nitrogen from the pilots body, they start breathing pure oxygen before flight to purge it out, so they don’t get decompression sickness. Got to remember, these things basically fly on the edge of space

It's actually very common according to my tyre fitter who also sells them. He used to get many complaints about dud batteries so now they have a staff policy where they tell every customer who buys one to remember to remove the caps

It is toxic over time, so time is limited - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxygen_toxicity suggests as soon as 3 hours.

100% Oxygen is only used for 30 minutes before and during ascent/descent (between 10 and 30 minutes max, full pressure suit required for rapid descents) according to:

I remember David Blaine always taking 100% oxygen for a good while before his record breaking breath holding attempts. But he's not human anyway...

My favourite thing about the U2 is that it glides so well that it's incredibly hard to land. When it's coming in to land a fellow pilot chases it at high speed (used to use Fox Mustangs, now use Camaros iirc). When it's lined up and at a height of less than two feet the guy on the ground gives a signal and the pilot stalls the plane so it has a very small crash. If it's over two feet there's a chance the landing gear will collapse as it can't stand the shock .

Also titanium skidplates on the wing tips to slide along the ground as it only has two wheels. The ground crew has to put extra wheels on to the wings when it's stopped so it can taxi.
