Will have a chat with a friend over the weekend who has done a few sets on XF's now, not sure how it goes with the Adaptive Dampers and lowering.

Always wondered how it works on modern active dampers when people fit lowering springs. Do you disable the system entirely, or does it just not work as effectively and/or reduce the life of the dampers?

You keep the dampers plugged in, I guess the car just thinks its fully loaded all the time?

I've been looking and you can get new shorter adaptive dampers as part of a kit.

They're a lot of money though! 10x the cost of the Eibach springs alone!

I haven't used a main dealer. Ever. Except for some parts which are notoriously shit if they aren't OEM. They certainly haven't fitted them

Anyway, it's a 'shaky' one person job just to remove the glass (especially with my butter fingers) and my neighbour decided to go for a hike today so I think I'll return to this tomorrow.

The non glass removal way involves:
Removing the rear locating screw from the pane the one closest too the lock
Removing the locating screws for the guide rail, again, rear guide rail
Easing the guide rail or of the way, towards the front of the car - apparently needs a good yank.
Using the space made to get the actuator out.

Refit is reversed removal, etc, then re align the glass is necessary.

If the glass weren't there I'd try it, but far more sensible to have a second pair of hands. And my neighbour has a tweenage daughter so if we can't get our hands in to unclip some bits (cables, etc for the door handles) then we might be able to bribe her to get her dinky hands covered in twenty years of evaporated rainwater and butyl tape residue to unhook them

It doesn't seem to be a hard job, logistically - it just looks like two pairs of hands will make it significantly safer and less likely to go bad.

Fuck it, I think it's time for a late lunch.

The one he bought suspiciously cheap expecting an easy profit then found it had loads of problems and once he’d fixed them he was way into the red and now has to pretend he really likes it and it’s a keeper ?

Dampers just do damping, they don’t have any effect on the ride height. As long as they’re not sat bottomed out hammering their internal stops they’ll be fine.

Which is very correct of course, but if the car thinks it has 20mm of extra suspension droop due to what it may believe is extra weight in the car, will the damping strategy be the same?

Will it stiffen the damping to account for extra load in the car even though there's no extra load?

Metal valve caps are horrible. Essential to smear grease on the threads to avoid that crap.

Jimmy - mole grips are your friend. You’ll probably need a standard cap to go on afterwards though....

A set of mole grips and some replacement caps arrived today. With the assistance of a reluctant 8year old, the 3 shitty caps were binned and replaced with black plastic jobbies.

No I didn’t read it, didn’t realise it had holes in the bottom which pretty much makes it pointless, wasn’t worried about pick up, I have vans passing along the M4 most days.
