Road Trip 2021

Post by SSO »

Just posted a blog on planning for our 1st major road trip of 2021:

Anyone else have road trips planned?

Anything else we should consider?

Nowt without a new job, which I'm working on, slowly

Although it'll probably be no more adventurous than burning a tank and a half of fuel doing a loop through the Dales and North York Moors. I'm curious to see if fat tyres and a torquey 230bhp is less fun on those roads than a screaming 125bhp and 195 section rubber.

As soon as Covid and the overhaul of the car are done I’ll be driving to Scotland for some solo driving.

I also want to go up there and do some greenlaning but need to decide what to do with my Defender first.

I think it will be busy though as EVERYONE will be having a U.K. based holiday this year.

Dave!

I reckon once we start to return to normality I'll bugger off somewhere on a flight.
How about not having a sig at all?

My prediction is that no one will be going anywhere this year. Sorry

Managed to sneak a 3 day 650 mile trip to Scotland last summer bank holiday, with the family -lucky to have wife and kids that enjoy road trips (been as far as Euro Disney in the car with them).
Set off up the A1 at sunrise, McDonalds breakfast before heading up the A69 stopping at a few towns on the way, nice afternoon in Edinburgh, then headed over to our Air BnB near Stirling. Second day a nice drive over to Glen Coe (stopping at Callander en route), walked around one of the Lochs then droove down to Loch Gare for another Air B'nB right on the shores of the Loch. Visited a few spots around Loch Lomond and took the back roads to Hamilton where we had Pizzahut for Tea, nice steady run down the M6 and a little too spirited on the A65 home (made one of my kids puke).
Time wise probably 50% of the days was driving, so nothing heroic and plenty of time to enjoy the places.

Kids loved the trip and want to do it again so this year we are thinking about heading up the west coast.
Fingers crossed restrictions are lifted - I want to visit Oban again and my wife is keen to see if getting as far as Skye is viable.

Had 3 return Ferry crossings booked for 2020.

They allowed me to rebook them for this year. First return trip is to Ireland in late June. Doubt it will happen.

Other two return crossings are to mainland Europe in early and late September. I doubt they'll happen either.

Yep, I'm being pessimistic to avoid disappointment 😂

I'm trying to speculatively book a trip back to Ireland for Late August - Interesting that Stena will let me book but Irish Ferries will not. You can only book outbound journeys departing in the next few weeks.

It's a bit of a Gamble - If there's quarantine requirements but they're reasonably short - say 72 hours with evidence of Negative Test - then I have a house in Dublin I can use that's normally empty and I can get my sister to stock it with food etc before we arrive. Then we can have our 2 week holidays

But if quarantine is still very strict then there's Zero point in going. Then there's whatever Boris decides will be the quarantine rules when we come back. (Although thankfully Ireland always seem to be an exception to the usual "European Union" rules.)
