Police a bit eager with the numbers there.

More like 150. They're doing the media's job for them.

 I knew when I posted that, the first comment would be along those lines. You could say the same about 15 of course, but still a ridiculous overestimate.

I wondered when this would start happening.

There must be intense political pressure on the vaccine manufacturers from all sides. The speed at which countries roll it out could be worth billions in terms of getting their economies back up and running, so everyone wants to be in poll position.

You have to laugh at the EU - the excuses of AZ in not being able to meet the number of original doses is not good enough and they must deliver on their contractual arrangement. Like a massive pharma such as AZ aren't going to be doing all that they can to fulfil their contractual obligations. Sometimes shit just happens.

It's no surprise that this has happened at all, albeit I thought it would be the yanks at it first.

I thought the supply problems were due to them upgrading/expanding production equipment but it doesn't sound like it from that story. The EU member states are also rallying together to sue AZ if they don't meet the contract but that just sounds like they're going to fuck themselves in the longer term!
How about not having a sig at all?

I'm not sure what the issues are but gather they had some problems with one of the batches. But then last week there was a big effort by emergency services in North Wales to prevent the Wrexham-based manufacturing plant from flooding.

Sometimes, shit just happens, and threats don't help anyone. But then, this is more about the EU trying to protect it's position long after it's well and truly fvcked it up all by itself.

It's rare that I'd suggest reading what Peston has to say, but here's his take

TL:DR - Typical EU farting about cost them precious months for AZ to setup the EU supply chain and iron out issues. It's a "best efforts" contract, and the EU is wrong to state that it pays less for the vaccine than the UK and therefore is being punished - everyone pays the same.

What a bunch of cunts

Yes, I was actually looking for that source myself as I was sure it was mentioned elsewhere as the reason why the UK would continue to get its full allowance.
Not sure what the EU are trying to achieve here, aside from turning their public perception against the UK because "we took their vaccines and killed their grandparents"

Surely the new export rules talk implies that they're worried the suppliers are giving away EU doses to other countries?

I doubt they would write anything into the contracts about order of preference for deliveries though, more likely just a set of dates by which certain quantities should be delivered. I guess the decision sits with the supplier as to whether they choose to breach one contract by giving a lot less to one party, or all their contracts by giving a little less to everybody. The former is potentially cheaper from a litigation perspective, if not a moral perspective.

They're simply trying to save face and divert blame. One of the replies to the many Remainers tweets that "AZ should honour their contract!" is that the issues for AZ's EU supply chain are apparently at the Belgium-based manufacturing site of French firm Novasep, who are contracted to manufacture the vaccine. But hey, "EU good, UK bad!"

Yes, from a lawyers perspective you could smell bullshit a mile away when there was an insinuation of breach of contract for failure to supply a set number of doses by a certain date. Extremely unlikely the drug companies would tie themselves in to a rigid schedule without large provisos and carve outs given that would expose them to a very large risk of being sued for events outside of their control.

Peston twitter thread is pretty damning but tells us nothing about the EU we didn't already know.

Also the UK AZ supplies are made in the UK (Wrexham?) whereas the EU supplies are made in Belgium.

Independent are reporting that AZ have pulled out of a meeting with the EU...

AZ made an announcement last night that essentially confirmed everything Peston said. EU delays to contracts lost 3mo, which lost crucial time in ironing out manufacturing issues at the EU based facilities.

Might get a bit spicy I reckon. I hope that we get a critical mass of vaccinations done before the EU increases it's cuntyness level further.
