Well, it doesn't burn as many calories Shirley.
Per given quantity of time, no. For obvious reasons. But there's not that much difference in actual calories burned over distance I believe.

It's clearly way more complex than that - this is an interesting peace on it:

Interesting, but when you don't want to spend all your time exercising, clearly running is more economical on time. No reason not to walk to more places that you need to go though.

Finding out what kicks your butt weight wise is more important than a calorie deficit when you age imo.

I can’t handle sugar, carbs, meat and fat are fine but when I have sugar it just piles on. I expect to lose 1.5 stone this month relatively easily and will only use an eezicurl bar at home.

Beany, if you really are a 44” waist then you should be able to lose a lot of weight very quickly unless you have a particularly muscle arse or thick muscular lower back. I’ve been a 42” waist but at the time was 302lbs.

This is correct in terms of calories over distance. I started running again at the beginning of last year. My goal was 8km per run just trying to cut down on my time. The first time I did it in over 80 minutes which was more of a jog mixed with fast walking. My watch says I burned 800 calories. Yesterday I ran 8 km in 53 minutes - apparently using 794 calories. So yes, no real difference in calories.

Less in, more out, it's that simple. Dropped 11kg in the 3 months leading up to Xmas (hate to think how much has gone back on!).
I've done the less in more out approach before and while it's always successful, to a point, the Less in is way harder to sustain than the more out. As Less In slips, More out must increase and it never did. therefore, weight goes off, weight goes on.

This time, I decided to try Same In, More out. Initially I made very little change to my food intake (I ditched fizzy drinks which I know is a biggie) but I kept just about everything else. (Nice food, Takeaway's and meals out, beer / wine etc). I also set myself the "Target" of "1 lb per month - STAYING OFF". 1 lb per month is nothing but after a year, it's nearly a stone. 3 years in and my weight had dropped from 17st plus to 15st and it was staying off. Then I had a bit of a lull but shifted another 1.5 Stone this year.

Edit - @Beany - I had a completely different image in my head for you... Slim, Heavy Metal T-Shirt, Black Leather Trench Coat.

Blimey - there are some impressive weight losses on this thread! Well done chaps!

I did a very restrictive diet in the months leading up to Xmas (5 days a week of 800 calories a day) and while I agree it’s not sustainable in the long run, it altered my relationship with food. I am very guilty of using food as a crutch - eating because I’m actually tired or grumpy or whatever - and the diet helped me break that negative relationship to some extent.

Also: I am a Joe Wicks convert these days. Very easy workouts to do and to stick with.

No, years of wearing belts and ', growing into them' means I'm more built like a link of sausages  but to be fair, when I do walk to work etc the weight generally comes away steadily, but it's more the improvement in lower back strength and leg strength that is notable.

As for the black and trenchcoat, that was a look for a while, but I'm more a black jeans, dark shirt kinda guy now, with one of a few business coats thrown over depending on the weather. Hoodie for weekend duties :)

Long story short, working in an office and barely moving, and sitting in front of a computer most nights, mixed with driving everywhere is the actual problem. Bit less driving, bit more walking, it'll be reet.

1: This year I'm hoping for another solid 12mo for the company...
2: We might also move offices, to one that's just come free in the building.
3: This year the main aims at home are to progress the kitchen and get that undertaken within the next few months. But...
4: it will need to tie with work on the rear garden/patio space &...
5: new windows (potentially all round).
6: I also might try and sneak in an internal extension of the garage space as well
7: I'm also keen to get brewing again. As I'll need to keep the garage clear for the kitchen being done, I think I'll probably resort to brewing up in the garage rather than the shed.
8: Going to make more of an effort this year to get away for short breaks with the nipper.
9: As for the car situation - the plan is to move the 330 on fairly soon. I'll be keeping my eyes peeled for a 650i Gran Coupe in the interim. Work may be required to cut back the hedge at the front to get one on the driveway next to the Superb though. I'll get whinged at for getting a big car when we already have one, but fvck it. Careful timing in relation to kitchen project may be required.
How it went

1: Surprisingly not too bad. I worked 5mo at 3days/week and 1 at 4/days, so a hefty cut in earning capacity both for company and personally. Had my first full paycheck in December and now I'm back to 3 days / week! The company thought didn't really do too badly, largely thanks to 1 fellow Director who was able to continue working full time.
2: We moved offices 1mo before lockdown 1.0. Excellent timing. It's much nicer, from what I remember
3: Not surprisingly, that didn't happen. We're just about to get the order placed, almost 12mo later.
4: Yeah - not so much a priority now, after spending on structural works at both the front and rear of the house and the imminent kitchen
5: Also not gone well. Took months to organise, then we needed the above works doing to the front bay, and now we're waiting on the windows - delays due to covid. But as it stands the front should be being done soon. The rear will eb done with the kitchen
6: I've literally just this evening determined that the garage tweaks are not worth it. I'd gain 200mm on a space which is currently 4250mm x 2880mm (3680mm long once you account for steps up into the house). It will simply not be practical to keep a car in. :(
7: Not happened. There's always this year!
8:
9: Also         - won't happen until at least after kitchen is done. So maybe later this year or early next depending on how well house works proceed and howo the business continues to go.

2020

Good - Was fortunate to be able to work throughout the year, no reductions in pay and actually received a bonus and pay rise. Which I was grateful for, but in a way, didn't quite sit right with me, as the company I work for made some redundancies
Also during later part of the year, I finally had my new job confirmed within the new parent company, which is a good thing.

Bad - Had to cancel all of my holidays because of some virus going round.

Ugly - Seemed to be a year where alot of my relatives passed away in the Philippines 😔.

2021

Will hopefully settle into my new job and get along with my new colleagues in Europe. Hoping that I can go on the trips I had planned for 2020. I have been squirrelling away money for another year of travelling, which I hope to do in 2022...though I may have to get a house build out of the way before I can do that (currently in the process of buying the plot of land...triple garage ahoy-hoy!).

2020

It's unlikely you'll hear me pronounce that any particular year can do one, but I will concede that 2020 presented a lot of unpleasant circumstances. At the beginning of the year my youngest daughter was told she has too many 'extra' heart beats (23% are ectopic) and Great Ormond Street are investigating whether theirs a more sinister cause. After series of ECG's, Ultra Scans, Exercise ECG's, 24 hour and 7-day heart rate monitors they're still undecided. They want a decent MRI scan but the beta blockers have so far been unsuccessful in reducing the extra beats and can't get a decent image. Last resort will be to bring her in and give her something they know will work, but it does comes with potentially serious side effects - hence they'll need her in hospital to monitor her.

In March our horse needed to be put down and I was not prepared for how I would feel about it. I never understood those that got very upset when a pet passed on, but I cried for about 3 days and it took a while to come to terms with it. I understand now!

You might remember that our eldest was diagnosed with Crohn's a few years ago, well she had a full relapse in June and needed an operation to remove the infected part of her intestine. She then became infected from the operation and needed a melon sized ball of puss to be removed. All in she spent a month in hospital whilst I tried to maintain looking after our youngest, schooling and trying to fit work in. Fortunately she made a good recovery and is back to annoying me at work (she works with me!).

I finally decided that in addition to doing protection insurance, I wanted to offer mortgage advice too so started on my CeMap exams. That was the easy part, the hard part was getting the Network to accept a newbie to give mortgage advice through them. After 6 months of audit checks, financial checks, 6 further examinations, another 5 day course, an interview with the assessor and case study checks, they've agreed to do it.

No one got Covid though.

Car wise no changes but a lot of daydreaming about a 911 GTS or an old pick up.

2021

Find out what's the cause of our youngest ectopic beats.

A break from any medical issue would be nice!

Make existing clients aware that I'm mortgage qualified.

Continual daydreaming of getting a 911 (with the occasional single cab old pick-up thought), although it's unlikely I will be changing anything this year.

Yeh my heart rate has always been on the high side during exercise but that was probably pushing it a bit. Interval training kind of encourages you to push it.

Will almost certainly come down significantly over the course of the next few weeks/runs.

@GG.

Good going.

Been relatively good myself this winter.... but did absolutely nothing in the last 10 days.

Just done a gentle 20-25 mins of mixed exercise.

Winter is hard and really requires good discipline.

Very much this, it’s kicking my arse with a dog so I don’t even know where to imagine what those feelings must be like for children. You’ll look back and realise how strong your kids have been I have no doubt.
