4 Paw Dog Drive Fleet running report
Re: 4 Paw Dog Drive Fleet running report
Just had another dog from the same rescue Alfie is from dropped off, initially on a weeks trial to see how they get on. He’s a saluki greyhound cross, 18 months old and all puppyfied. He’s not house trained yet, any advise from anyone would be greatly appreciated as we’ve never really had to house break a dog before and we’ve never had 2 dogs at the same time
Re: 4 Paw Dog Drive Fleet running report
Forgot to add a picture, the new dog is Toby, the white ball of fluffyness
Re: 4 Paw Dog Drive Fleet running report
Awesome
Only advice on house training is to keep them close - if they start to go inside then get them out immediately and loads of praise when they do it out there.
Clean areas they Use inside thoroughly as they can have a desire to return to the same spot now they’ve scented it.
And no rubbing their nose in it or other punishment if they go inside. Just clean it up without any fuss.

House training is going well, only had a couple of accidents with wees but no poos which is great and much better than expected.
Alfie tolerates Toby and is willing to have a good play outside but inside the house he’s not so enamoured by him- growls of he sits next to him for example.
So question once again for those with multiple dogs, how long does it generally take for a dog to fully accept a new addition to the household?

Re: 4 Paw Dog Drive Fleet running report
I’d say around 4 weeks. They may have to have a wee doggy snarl and snap are each other to establish normal dog-pack hierarchy. Which really isn’t very pleasant to see but is very natural - so long as they aren’t actually going for it.
Re: 4 Paw Dog Drive Fleet running report
We’re a week in with Toby and I’m happy to say he’s 100% staying. We’ve had 3 days with no accidents which is way better than I could have hoped for. Toby has settled quite nicely and we’re now able to read his signs for needing to go out for wees/poos, we’ve overcome his very pulley nature on the lead by swapping to a harness which has worked wonders. Alfie is more accepting of him every day, and is like a different dog, he loves playing with Toby, lots of play fighting out in the garden- only downside is Toby is a white fluff ball and ends up filthy
I think he may be the most photogenic dog I’ve ever seen
No idea why it took us so long to get 2 dogs, it’s amazing- with them entertaining each other is actually less work than one!

Re: 4 Paw Dog Drive Fleet running report
Been to a trainer today, to see about trying to sort out Toby’s aggressive lunging and barking at other dogs on walks. He assessed him and decided to try letting him off with one of his dogs- an impressively well trained Malinois protection dog with a high tolerance of other dogs. Turns out his aggression appears to just be frustration at not being able to play with every dog he encounters- so back next week to work on his recall and an opportunity to socialise him with some other dogs
Any excuse for a pic

What Mik says, dogs really are never on a level playing field, they need a good row to assert who is in charge in what area. Dogs are so much more relaxed when they know their place. They both look really cool, speed machines
Flash has torn a ligament in his left back leg. No idea how but the wife thinks it may have been slipping on some mud when out for a walk. A week later and he is still lifting his leg up after the vet said to keep him home and he is getting painkillers. He is not a happy bunny.
When he is able to walk again I think I’ll do a lot of hydrotherapy with him (we have a dog hydrotherapy a 5 minute walk away) and do that twice a week for a month or so before letting him off. His absolute favourite thing in the world is jumping a metre in the air to catch a ball and he’s a big boy so I don’t want to have him do it too early.

Well what was thought to be his ligament has escalated quickly.
Just drove home from work as his x-ray shows a tumor. Apparently the one he has is the one which spreads pretty badly and the choice is make him comfy, his leg is likely to fracture just from standing up though it’s going to get so thin. Remove the leg which has its own issues, he’s a big dog, a prosthetic but that’s a long recovery time and he will unlikely get much longer anyway.
Absolutely devestated.

That's shit
My sympathies to you and your family - horrible situation to have to make a decision about.
At risk of asking an insensitive question but does insurance stretch as far as someone like Fitzpatrick referrals or is the cancer already metastasized and that kind of intervention would be pointless?

Best wishes to Flash.

He hasn’t been insured for a couple of years as Rotties are silly money to insure. Money isn’t an issue though luckily.teacherboy wrote: ↑Thu Dec 03, 2020 8:34 pm That's shit

A prosthetic is just a lot of pain for a dog his sized and there isn’t much of the bone left to attatch one too anyway
Nearly lost it when I grabbed some shoes and had to move his ball thrower out the way, bloody animals.
