Simpler just to increase the tariffs on electricity. When the main consumer of electricity is charging EVs then it'll just be built into that.

They’ll just stick a separate meter on the charge point supply and use a different tariff for that surely?

Lump sum on collection for the first 3 years - we already essentially had that stupid showroom tax thing up until the Spring didn’t we?

At first I thought that, but that's of little use if you're using a 3-pin, or charging on-street. Then there's the issue of what do you do about those that can use superchargers for free - could be canny if you live near one and just use that all the time.

It's less straightforward than you'd think.

As Simon says above, GPS tracking is the most logical way to do it.

That’s any speeding dealt with straight away and any fun driving stopped if they use an ANPR or GPS based system.

It’s accelerating my car plans as I feared this would come in eventually and essentially wipe out our hobby.

NZ kind of do this with diesel cars, rather than red diesel for your tractor or boat there's a surcharge for road use (something like $76 / 1000kms).

I think when road pricing was first mooted 15 years ago this is what they suggested anyway. I'm not saying it's fair but I wouldn't be surprised if this is what they end up with.

According to the official figures there were 356.5 billion miles driven in 2019.

Simply dividing this into the £40 billion of revenue raised from fuel duty and VAT means about 11.2p per mile. However, some of that £40 billion comes from trucks, some from buses etc. and of course they are not switching from all ICE to all electric overnight. There'll be ICE cars on the road for years to come. I suggest an average ppm of 11p at 2030/35 (in today's money), and then for electric vehicles only.

That 11.2p a mile means that it will cost me 2.5k extra a year if nothing else changes.

The money isn’t the issue, it’s knowing where you are and when which worries me.

If they apply it to ICE cars will they remove the tax from fuel, or just double tax you? I can guess the answer to that.
