Supermarket curry review

Post by Jobbo »

Sadly Co-op changed the packaging of their curries so they can no longer be cooked in the oven. I was a particular fan of their chicken biryani; it isn't the same heated in a microwave.

However, last night I tried something worth mentioning: the Iceland Scarily Spicy Carolina Reaper Chicken Curry. The packaging says 'Limited Edition' but it seems to have been around for a year or two, judging by the reviews I've found when googling.

It is properly hot. I tasted the tip of the spoon as I was serving it onto my rice, and decided not to tip the whole lot out. The chicken is actually pretty good, as is the texture of the sauce, but it has more heat than flavour (not unusual with a stupidly hot sauce). I described it as inedible to my wife but managed to finish half of it with quite a lot of rice and some cold San Miguel. I'd recommend trying it if you're into properly hot stuff.

Marks and Spencer Jalfrezi and Sainsbury's Chicken Biryani are the only two I keep in the emergency pile.

Waitrose FIery Keralan Chicken is a good one. It's done in the oven and is a nice dry curry (I'm not fussed about lots of sauce with my curry). Nice amount of heat, but plenty of flavour. They do a battered version as well I think.

You are the new Mick Newey AICMFP.
If you get all wobbly-lipped about the opinion of Internet strangers, maybe it's time to take a bath with the toaster as you'll never amount to sh1t anyway.

Got one of those a few months ago and thought it was good, but haven't seen it in my local Tesco since.

Used to work with a guy who had a few bottles of hot sauce with him and would dose pretty much every single meal with one of them. His taste buds must have been shot to pieces because even a tiny drop of any of them was the hottest thing I've ever tasted.

I'll be honest though, its the morning after that gets me.
Cheers,

Mike.

You can get them in Waitrose too, but it's about £6, so a lot more than others.

The old Whole Foods Market in Cheltenham was closed a couple of years ago and Iceland took it over as a new sub-brand 'Food Warehouse' - it's actually quite nice inside, though there are a lot of freezers as you'd anticipate and the stock is all Iceland stuff, plus a fantastic aisle of catering size bottles of ketchup etc

I cooked it in the oven - I hate microwaves.

One of my favourite reviews of it said that the chap's bell end stung for three pisses after eating it

Yeah, agree about Bigham's stuff - stylish but no flavour.
