If you have a good one at relative low mileage, you'd be best keeping it rather than buying another one, as at that age, they're all going to need a similar amount of work.

Just chatting to the wife about the Yeti's annual service being due. She asked about the MOT. I said it was done in summer but then found out I'd actually forgotten about it - it was due in July, but handily has been extended until Jan next year. Phew

7-Series failed its MOT yesterday. A bulb, and headlight washers not working.
It had run out of washer fluid.
Boringest fail possible.

I remember taking mrs mik’s Disco3 for an MOT. Had checked basics in advance.
Due to 4wd complexities they don’t test the brakes on a roller - it’s a quick test drive with a decelerometer. First thing they did before taking it onto the ramp. As he hopped in it and switched the lights on I spotted the near side tail light out. It was DEFO fine when I left the house
It failed on that and a twisted flexi brake line - Caliper bolted on after rotating it 360deg - thank the £120 per hour official JLR workshop for that....

Same here with the bulb ! The car pings up a warning if there’s a bulb out and it didn’t do it on the way to the MOT place, but it was there when I drove home.
And as for the washer fluid, there was enough to run the screen wash and not trigger the low level warning, but not quite enough to do the headlights.
All very annoying, but thankfully very cheap to resolve

Fabia has always had a vibration to it as you accelerate through about 2000-2800 rpm (above that it's fine), which vibrates the whole car. Feels like it's got a bit worse recently and also I think there's a rattling sound audible as you slow down to a stop. All feels like it's emanating from the front left. Engine mount? Knackered suspension part?
Not sure if it does it when stationary. I need to try that.
Got the MOT due in a month so prefer to know before it goes in for that.
My jack oil has arrived so if I can fix the jack I'll get the front wheels off again and see if there's anything obviously not right (to my very untrained eye!)

Given the car’s history, it’s entirely possible it’s been upgraded at some point.
I’d take a look at engine mounts too, when I had the extra-hard ones in the Compact it had an unbearable vibration at about 60mph. If the current one(s) have failed it could do something odd.

Our Focus had a vibration at 3000rpm, I looked for years and never found it till I had to replace the driveshaft. The support bearing which mounts to the engine block had failed so they are worth looking at too.
Can’t explain why an rpm vibration was linked to different driveshaft speeds though

I finally by the bullet and am having work done on the Defender.
1 bulkhead outrigger had something bolted to it at some point in its life and was a hole had appeared.
The other outrigger had a thin layer of rust but it has been wire wheeled in the past and o had the 2 central out-riggers.
So I’m having all 4 chopped off. While it’s on the lift some Old Man Emu Nitrocharger Sport shock absorbers are being fitted, galvanised front suspension turrets and hardwear plus rear spring isolators, basically a ring of rubber for NVH help.
If I see change from 2K I’ll be very pleased

I’ve been in Cornwall for most of August, so have only done about 10 miles in the Compact since replacing the idle control valve.
It still has an oil pressure sensor fault, but I haven’t fitted the replacement yet, so that might not help that I still have an issue.
Unfortunately it hasn’t completely solved the problem. It no longer goes into limp home mode, but has an occasional rough idle when coming to a stop which then goes away after about ten seconds, or the idle is perfect and the EML and engine symbol comes on.
My eBay diagnostics tells me it runs lean on two banks when this happens, so perhaps I have an air leak. I’ll do the oil sensor and have a better look at it, or throw it at my mechanic because I’ve got no time.
Gummi pfledge to the door and boot seals has eliminated most of the creaks.
The 4” rip in the drivers seat was sorted today - it cost 20% of the purchase price of the car...
New foam in the bolster, new leather panel, shrink and reconnolise the whole seat.
This and a new ZHP gear knob have made a massive difference to how fresh the car feels when you get in it.
