Returned BMW their locking nuts on my way home. Car feels much nicer over rough surfaces, less road noise too. Had a check of the tyres and fronts are made in Germany and the rears from USA but both sets manufactured in June/July. I do wonder if the USA ones will be a slightly tougher compound - would be nice on a RWD.

I was also recommended a new Indy to check out my dodgy rear end. I lost faith in the old one after I believe they over tightened the sump nut and then couldn’t see anything wrong on the rear end so will give this new one a try.

Not being funny but mistakes like that are why you shouldn’t be doing stuff yourselves. That could have gone through a windscreen........

Meh, sometimes the "professionals" do worse. I've had mechanics leave gloves in the engine compartment before. Everyone makes mistakes.

Just having a break from sweating my tits off putting the M5 tyre back on. Boot was open on the 6 and I used my photoshop app to remove it. Was going to graft a 996 front half on it but the app isn’t advanced enough

Yep I noticed that years ago when they first came out - the rear end is essentially 911 with a duvet plonked on the back (and a hoffmeister kink of course).

So yeah. This is what happens when I'm sensible. No really. Bear with me.

Seeing as I'm WFH for the foreseeable, I'm not driving the 7-Series the 500+ miles a week I bought it for. The Touareg does very few miles too, but it does serve a purpose, for towing. So my wife started pressing to sell the 7 & Touareg, and get a nice 4x4 that will do towing, but also be a nice family car.

To trim down a long story - a Cayenne GTS appealed, but didn't quite click for me, then this turned up. Nearly silver, sensible miles, not too far from home. It must have been fate. What's the only SUV more stupid than a 5 litre V10 ? A 6 litre V12 Rare too, howmanyleft says there's only 25 on the road.

The fuel consumption shouldn't be worse than the Touareg. Insurance & VED is less than the current 7+Touareg combo. And it means fewer cars on the driveway. On that basis I got it past the wife as being sensible. I'm a lucky chap.

And THEN, googling stuff, it turned out this was the UK press car. It was on Top Gear & Driver's Republic. It's in the one in the pics in the Autocar review. It doesn't add to the value but it's a nice back story.

Mower again.

Replaced the drive cable tonight and it is wheel spinning again. Great.

It was however a bastard to start. Kicked back on me and nearly broke my arm. Turning over fine with the plug out - wtf is going on now?

Internet research schooled me on mower design. The flywheel is bolted onto the crank and positioned for timing purposes with a sacrificial woodruf key. You get problems if you hit a rock or big root and the engine comes to a sudden stop. And yes - this has happened more than once recently on the tougher section of the lawn. Took the axe to a root the other weekend to stop that happening again.

So to avoid bending / breaking your crank or a rod in such a situation - the sacrificial key is, well, sacrificed - as it takes the impact energy from the flywheel rather than the crank

Pulled the top cover and pull-start off and could see that this was my issue. Didn’t take any pics as I was too busy removing the flywheel without the appropriate puller tool. Which was a PITA.

It looked like this - with the slots in crank and flywheel almost completely out of line. Aha.



New key was only £2 - hopefully when it arrives I’ll have a mower I can start again without fear of shoulder dislocation.
