Bought some 16" BBS wheels from FB marketplace. All looked good, bit scruffy but nothing a refurb wouldn't sort. Took a while to find any in the right offset/pcd/width that would clear the caliper and didn't look chavvy.

Took for a refurb, tyres purchased in the meantime - but after they stripped them back to metal, found they're all buckled

So I can either:
Bail out now for £120, weigh in the scrap wheels and have £300's worth of tyres to sell;
Pay £650 in refurb+repair fees for wheels that'll be worth half that;
Paint as is, and they'll do their best to balance them and I can "see how it goes" and repair later if needed...

I had a buckle fixed for £30 and it’s been fine for the last 30,000 odd miles.

This was as a lone repair, only issue is it has double the weights of the other wheels but they only had. Couple of weights each anyway.

I thought they just clamped them in a big large and pushed a nylon wheel against the lip to push the buckle out ?

Stone chip + crack just as I was driving up the A1 to Scotland. The autoglass bloke came today but warned me of a high chance of it cracking right across the windscreen as he repaired it and a risk that they wouldn’t be able to replace that while I was up here. As the chip hasn’t got any bigger overnight I’ve elected to cross my fingers and get it fixed when I’m back down South.

They did a great job on mine but took a while to get the screen in and I had to chase it up.

I had visions of being marooned in Scotland waiting for a replacement screen to materialise.

Yes that would be a crap holiday.

Well I spent an hour rewiring a Instrument Pack for the sake of some shiny rings and LEDs 

It does look nice though so all is forgiven, even the burn on my thumb which means the fingerprint reader on my phone doesn't recognise me anymore.

Also ordered some more wheels, as as lovely as the ones I've put on it are, they're not Volvo ones and that upsets me more than it should, so they can be winter wheels and ill leave the Crossclimates on them, and the new Capella 18's will be summer wheels, 4 Goodyear Eagle F1s ordered in 235 40 18 ready to fit once they're here

Yes, bail - I've had buckled wheels repaired a few times and they're never completely balanced afterwards. Paying so much only to have them less than perfect will drive you mad. Keep the tyres and find another set.

My wheel balanced much better after repair, and stopped leaking air (despite tyre fitter not being able to find a leak in the 1st place)

That was my thought - but if I do, I'm down £320 (wheels+part refurb) then I've still got to find some other wheels. I never would have thought finding 16" wheels in 4x100 would be so difficult, but throw in the added challenge that for some reason the Up GTi calipers are strangely difficult to clear makes it even harder.

I knew I gave up modifying cars for a reason.

That's always the fear with second hand wheels - I think that's part of the reason my e92 never got competition style wheels.

Yes, mine also balanced better after the buckles had been taken out, and held air after cracks had been repaired, but still gave a tell-tale shimmy at certain speeds despite appearing on the machine to be perfectly balanced.

Ah ok. Mine's been fine thankfully. Even the really bad buckle that we had on the front face of one of our old 1-series was fine after repair, with no issues at speed.

I just checked and it cost me £300 inc VAT for a refurb of all 4 wheels plus £30/wheel for any repairs. And that's 18". So as I thought, over £600 seems steep. The Wheel Specialist (have centres all over the country) quoted £320+VAT and £45+VAT/wheel for repair just for comparison

Finally, today was Brembo day.

Due to a distinct lack of information on the internet I wasn’t sure they would physically fit a lesser model mito.

So back in feb I bought the cheapest, scruffiest set I could don’t, which crucially came with the brackets.

Stripped as best I could, painted, new pads, pins, clips and nipples, braided hoses with stainless fittings, and after two sets of decals not being up to standard I finally found some I was happy with. Brackets and bolts also cleaned up and painted.



New 305mm disks up from 285s, fitted, bled, all bolts checked.



And taken for a quick spin to break the pads in and clean the corrosion resistant coating off the disks and make sure nothing falls off before I try and go to work in the morning.



After a couple of poor initial stops I was a bit worried, but must just have been the various coatings burning off. After a few miles they have noticeably more bite than the old ones, look miles better and hopefully won’t melt after a little abuse.

I think I am falling out of love with the 911 a bit. All the way up to 997 still look great, but I was looking at a 992 the other day and it looked mahoosive. Not trying to argue that they are anything other than hugely capable, but..... losing their appeal for me.

I think I am falling out of love with the 911 a bit. All the way up to 997 still look great, but I was looking at a 992 the other day and it looked mahoosive. Not trying to argue that they are anything other than hugely capable, but..... losing their appeal for me.

I feel the same (with added personal bias, obvs). I recall sitting in a 991 not long after getting my 996 and apart from some styling cues it felt like a different car. Bigger, lots more “stuff”, very much moving in the GT direction. I didn’t walk away wanting one.

I suspect the air cooled bufties felt the same way when the 996 was released.
